    The Coast Salish Indians studied here have lived with pervasive financial insecurity. Most Indians have coped partly through preaching and practice of a collective ethic of sharing. Some with relatively high earned income have moved in the direction of a more narrow, competitive individualism.     To demonstrate the Coast Salish economic position, use is made of city directory employment data for samples of Indians and neighbouring low income non-Indians. Since the Indians, even while superficially occupying the same economic niche as non-Indians, are shown to have a lower economic standing, the data appear to support the metropolis-satellite model of politicoeconomic organization.
