Application of Macrocharcoal Analysis in Archaeolog
This article discusses the method for analyzing macroscopic charcoal (larger than 100 μm) as a key archaeological and paleoecological tool for reconstructing the history of fires and fuel use strategies among ancient people. Despite its relative fragility, charcoal, which was emerged from incomplete combustion of organic matter, can be found in sediments up to a million years old and is highly preservable in various environments. Over the last 50…
Paleodiet Reconstruction
Research of the diet of ancient populations provides information on the economic and cultural life of the ancient societies. Paleodiet reconstruction is at the intersection of archaeology and natural sciences. Food remains of plant or animal origin as well as human remains are used for studying this field. Soot deposits on pottery consisting of organic food remains are also an important source of information. Food products are generally not prese…
Results of Excavations at the Tashtyk Burial Ground of Tesinsky Zaliv-3 (Bograd District of the Republic of Khakassia) in the Field Season of 2025
This article presents the results of ongoing fieldwork at the rapidly crumbling Tashtyk burial ground of Tesinsky Zaliv-3 located in Bograd District of the Republic of Khakassia. Bones of adult human were found on the rocky beach of the shore from a burial which collapsed from the coastal cliff. Excavation pit VII revealed two ground graves. Grave 1 was destroyed, but a part of the cribwork and two ceramic vessels survived. Grave 2 had a birch ba…
Experimental Traceological Research on Drilling Solid Minerals
Purpose. In archaeological sites of the Early Iron Age and the Hunno-Sarmatian period, there are very similar bead sets, among which carnelian products stand out. Carnelian has a high hardness coefficient and its drilling, even with modern tools, it is extremely technological and time-consuming. The important detail of the drilling process is the configuration of the cutting part of the tool, which leaves specific traces on the stone. In order to…
