Reduction of the diphthong system in the Odul language
This study examines the phonetic evolution of the endangered Odul language (Forest Yukaghir) by analyzing the diachronic development of its diphthong system. There is a significant discrepancy between the rich inventory of diphthongs documented in early linguistic records and their uncertain status in the contemporary language, which is now spoken by only a few elderly individuals. Hence, the primary objective is to verify the current existence a…

The change of the ancient Yukaghir phoneme /ħ/ in diachrony (using the example of the Odul language)
This work examines several previous studies that documented the different stages of the Odul language development and our own language material. The analysis revealed the natural phonetic process of the Yukaghir phoneme /M/ transformation. This process was took place in different ways in different Odul tribes. However, two directions of development can be clearly distinguished: the first—[ħ] → [ħs''] → [s''], the second—[ħʃ] → [ħʃ''] → [ʃ'']. Thi…
Previously undescribed vowel type
In general phonetics, vowels are considered as speech sounds pronounced without any stricture in the epiglottic cavities, with the lips, tongue, and soft palate playing a special role in their formation. In terms of structure, a distinction is made between monophthongs and diphthongs. We believe vowel formation to be influenced by numerous barriers and regard the role of lips, tongue, and soft palate as secondary one, that is, they provide only a…
Vowels
This paper presents the results of long-term studies of the vocalism of languages of different families in the Nadelyaev Laboratory of experimental phonetic research (Institute of Philology, SB RAS). The study was conducted using both somatic and acoustic research methods. The analysis involved the material collected by the author and taken from other works involving the same methods, so that all the obtained material could be comparable. Vowels …
Articulatory Traits of “a”-Type Sound Realizations in the Barabian, Altai, and Bashkir Languages in the Comparative Aspect
Purpose. Experimental phonetics is a fundamental source of typological reconstructions. It provides plausible data on the phonetic processes progressing in a language, dialect, or subdialect. In this paper, we compare the results of MRI-investigation of the sound a (it being the most frequently used in the Turkic languages) in related though quite distant languages: Baraba-Tatar, Altai (Ust-Khan subdialect) and Bashkir (Eastern dialect). Thus, th…
