The Archaeology of Mural Painting at Pañamarca, Peru
This volume is split into two parts, the first detailing historical engagement (mainly from the nineteenth century on) with the Moche site of Pañamarca on the north coast of Peru (which contains murals dating from ca. 600–800 CE and was occupied by the Moche earlier, the dates of which are unknown), the second detailing the findings of the 2010 field excavation and conservation campaign carried out by Lisa Trever, Jorge Gamboa, Ricardo Toribio, a…
Malleable victims and discourses of dominance at Huaca de la Luna
At Huaca de la Luna, an ancient Moche ceremonial centre in northern coastal Peru (c. AD 200–850), archaeologists excavated ceramic vessels that seem to depict captive warriors defeated in battle. These effigies participate in a visual rhetoric of ritual violence that might be compared to the treatment of modern prisoners in the war on terror and to the contemporary exertion of state power. Interpretation of these effigies, some with representatio…
The Archaeology of Wak'as

Wak’as are also part of contemporary folk relationships with the physical and spiritual world of the Andes. While the title of this volume emphasizes the archaeological, most of the essays also make use of linguistic analysis, archival research, and ethnographic analogy to understand wak’as. The book cont…
At Home with the Sapa Inka
Both At Home with the Sapa Inka and The Inka Empire endeavor to foster a deeper understanding of Inka culture, especially as it was borne out through elite practices and spaces. Stella Nair uses the case study of Chinchero—a royal estate built by the emperor (Sapa Inka) Topa Inka—to explore how the site relates to cultural ideas (and ideals) of landscape, vision, power, and religion, while also framing the site as the specific expression of a sin…

Markers of Masculinity
This paper examines the male body in Moche art as a locus for the ideological construction of gender. It proposes that the male body is characterized by vitality, violence, and potency, and that an aspect of this characterization may affect the conventions for representing the phallus. These conventions specifically refer to the erect, sexually potent phallus, even when a specific phallus is not depicted as erect. This mode of representation atte…
