Reconfiguring the Kurdish Nation on YouTube
Around the globe, colonized nations and indigenous peoples make use of colonial photography of the nineteenth and early 20th century to provide documentation of oppression, slavery, and extinction, as well as of resistance and survival. In Iraqi Kurdish nationalist discourse, for example, this mode of representation can be observed from the 1960s and the first Kurdish modern guerrilla war. This article investigates narrations about Anfal constructed by peshmerga ten years after the events. It compares the memoirs of a leading commander published in Kurdistan with the biographical interview of a lower-ranking peshmerga conducted by myself for “Western” academic purpose. In so doing, the article highlight…
Competition, cooperation and resistance
After the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in April 2003 many women supported the process of transition and became active in political parties and coalitions. A wide range of groups were also formed which pursued women's rights agendas and, in many cases, included a call for peace and reconciliation and charity activities for women and children. However, female political action and the field of women's rights remain divided by the same multiple bo…
Representations of Peripheral Space in Iraqi Kurdistan
The large cities of Erbil, Dohuk and Sulaimaniya in Iraqi Kurdistan are described as places of economic growth and development. This article focuses on the sharp discrepancies between "better-off" cities and "extremely vulnerable" districts. The example of Qaradagh, a district center in the governorate of Sulaimaniya, is used to argue that a combination of circumstances has resulted in the town's economic and political dependency on Sulaimaniya, …
