Every History Has a Nature
Presidential addresses have always been in some measure personal reflections that aspire to engage broader issues facing our communities. Following that tradition, I will ground my talk today in my personal experience, in some of the work that I have done, but I also hope that in some small way it speaks to critical issues facing the public history community and indeed, all of our communities. At times over the past two years, it has seemed that …
The Great Basin
The Native peoples of the Great Basin live on some of the most arid and sparsely populated lands in the United States. The unforgiving basin environment has long influenced scholarly and popular perceptions of Great Basin Indians. This chapter is intended to historicize peoples who have too been naturalized. Spanish colonization in New Mexico transformed Native life in the Great Basin before the arrival of permanent Euro-American settlement. The …
The Size of the Risk
In this timely volume, Leisl Carr Childers traces the development of multiple use as a management philosophy rooted in the “notion that all land must have an identity and a utility” (p. 7). By the early twentieth century, the arid Great Basin had confounded federal laws intended to privatize public lands. With no clear identity as farmland, forest, or park, the region was perceived as a “wasteland.” Multiple use emerged as an expedient way to giv…

James N. Leiker and Ramon Powers. The Northern Cheyenne Exodus in History and Memory
In September 1878, after enduring a year of disease, hunger, and homesickness, some 350 Northern Cheyennes fled their exile in Indian Territory in a bid to return to their homelands in Wyoming and Montana. Along the way they fought off the pursing military and raided settlements in northwestern Kansas, leaving behind at least forty dead. Some of the Cheyennes surrendered to the military and were held at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. In January 1879, t…
The Gods of Prophetstown
In this imaginative, well-written dual biography of the Shawnee prophet Tenskwatawa and William Henry Harrison, Adam Jortner attempts, with mixed results, to reinterpret the westward expansion of the United States in the years surrounding the War of 1812. Harrison, the ambitious younger son of elite Virginia slaveholders, emerges as a ruthless politician who used cunning and personal connections to rule Indiana territory. Meanwhile, the Prophet, …

Beyond the Academy
Since its emergence in the mid-1980s, the “new western history” has become a standard approach for interpreting the region's past and has influenced the practice of public history in important ways. This essay summarizes the concerns and assumptions of the new western historians and then assesses the impact of their scholarship on public history. Of particular concern is its effect on community museums in the West. Two case studies from museums i…
