The Singer, the Porn Star, and Me
This article is about the intimacies between a Chicana sexuality studies ethnographer and two narrators—late Chicana singer Jenni Rivera and adult star Yurizan Beltran. All three Chicana femmes grew up in Long Beach, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, with parents of Mexican descent. Both narrators passed away in the same month, five years apart, and are memorialized in Long Beach. They are all icons of Chicana/Mexicana se…
Fat Women Can Be, and Are, Sexy: The DIY Fat Spectacular Aesthetic of April Flores and Carlos Batts's Porn Work
This article analyzes the porn work of the Latina adult performer April Flores to explore not only how Latina fat sexual futures are represented on-screen but also how they are lived, transmitted, and felt in the body. I focus on the porn work collaboration between Flores and her late husband, Carlos Batts, which featured what they defined as a "DIY spectacular aesthetic"-a cinematographic gaze that captures the futurity of the fat body through a…
Queering paisa style: The chunti style of buchonas, queer rancheros and Paisaboys
This article examines a Mexican and Mexican American style of dress referenced to as paisa style. This style of dress is often associated with corrido, norteño and Banda culture. In fact, after the Quebradita movement, during the 1990s, Mexican American youth adopted this style to create what is referred to as Chalinillo paisa subculture, which was heavily inspired by corrido singer Chalino Sanchez. Following Dick Hebdige’s definition of subcultu…
The Ontologies of Putas: Feeling the Visual Archive of Sex Work and Working Sex
In Spanish-speaking countries the quotidian use of the word puta represents the latinized feminine excess that is shamed, stigmatized, and criminalized for aberrant sexuality. In English, puta translates to whore and can also stand in for sex worker, prostitute, slut, hooker, bitch, and or simply woman. In her book Puta Life: Seeing Latinas, Working Sex, Juana María Rodríguez resignifies the word puta to trace its linguistic possibilities. Using …
A vulgar folklore: The pornographic fantasies of pornocorridos
This article examines the vulgar folklore of pornocorridos, sexually explicit ballads that have circulated Mexican popular culture since the 1970s. Current literature on pornocorridos argues that the subgenre is misogynistic and a violation of women's bodies. These anti-pornographic critiques resemble the feminists debates of the 1970s and 1980s, which argued that pornography was destructive and an expression of woman-hatred. This article argues …
Border Trash: The markings of Latinas as foreign bodies
This article studies the subgenre of border pornography and examines how Latina hypersexuality is represented. The author asks: what does border pornography say about borders, Latinas, and its political and historical pasts? What can we say about the different deployments of border pornography? Do some videos affectively carry racial stereotypes more than others? Lastly, how do brown spectators along with the actresses make sense of these border …
The making of fat erotics: The cultural work and pleasures of gordibuena activists
In the last decade, the term gordibuena has received increasing attention in Spanish-speaking social media outlets, and several fat activists have used the term to establish digital archives that promote fat Latina visibility. Gordibuena cultural production includes art, photography, music, books, YouTube videos, and daily Instagram selfies that celebrate the sensuality of fat Latinas. Using what I call “rasquache digital ethnography,” I read gor…
