Open Access•Minhye Park, Sanja Budisavljević et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2023

Background: Childhood and adolescence are critical stages for a healthy life. To support countries in promoting health and development and improving health care for this age group, the WHO Regional Office for Europe developed the European strategy for child and adolescent health 2015-2020, which was adopted by all countries. This paper reports progress in the strategy's implementation until 2020. Methods: A survey was sent to all ministries of he…

  • Structural validity of a brief scale adapted to measure adolescent spiritual health

Open Access•Nicole Shaver, Valerie Michaelson et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2020

Spiritual health is established as an important protective health asset in child populations. Measurement and assessment of this elusive concept are, however, challenging. Brief and age-appropriate instruments are required for surveys and related population health research. One longstanding model describing child spirituality suggests that scales and measures consider four standard domains describing connections to self, others, nature, and the t…

The spiritual health of adolescents is a topic of emerging contemporary importance. Limited numbers of international studies provide evidence about developmental patterns of this aspect of health during the adolescent years. Using multidimensional indicators of spiritual health that have been adapted for use within younger adolescent populations, we therefore: (1) describe aspects of the perceptions of the importance of spiritual health of adoles…

Ross D Whitehead, Ross Whitehead et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 42

Fruit and vegetable consumption is inadequate among adults in the United States; this contributes to preventable morbidity and mortality. More effective dietary intervention strategies are needed. Recently, interventions that advertise the consequences of behavior for appearance have been successful in modifying sun-exposure habits and tobacco use. Such an approach might also facilitate dietary improvement. Consumption of carotenoid-rich fruit an…

  • Cross-Cultural Effects of Fruit and Vegetable Consumption on Skin Color

Ross D Whitehead, Ross Whitehead et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The article reports on the impact that the consumption of fruits and vegetables containing high doses of plant pigments called carotenoids can have on skin color and the overall appearance of general health in humans. A discussion of research which was conducted to investigate whether African people and Asian people share a preference which Caucasian people have for skin which has a more yellowish tone which is associated with the consumption of …

  • Whitehead et al. Respond

Ross D Whitehead, Ross Whitehead et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•References: 6

We agree that fruit and vegetable consumption is likely to confer health benefits by substituting refined carbohydrates, saturated fats, and other foodstuffs that are unambiguously deleterious to health. We argue, though, that fruit and vegetables convey additional active benefits to human health. While it is true that trials have consistently indicated that the impact of antioxidant supplement intake is null or negative, these studies highlight …
