Using surface relief classes with LCZs for an improved heat island methodology: Demonstration in a small Brazilian city
The Local Climate Zone (LCZ) classification has standardized the treatment of built form and land-cover controls on urban temperature patterns, yet the framework does not explicitly treat the role of surface relief. This study addresses the need to incorporate surface relief features in each LCZ to support a deeper understanding of local thermal climates in and around cities. To this end, we propose a statistical approach based on LCZ relief clas…
Spatial patterns in urban water consumption: The role of local climate zones and temperature dynamics
Urban Water Consumption (UWC) is a major challenge in arid regions, intensified by urbanization, population growth, and resource scarcity, prompting debates on relocating Iran's capital to address resource scarcity and sustainability. This study analyzed the relationship between Local Climate Zones (LCZ), Land Surface Temperature (LST), and water usage in Tehran (2015–2019) to inform urban water management. UWC data was spatially matched to urban…
A global map of local climate zones to support earth system modelling and urban-scale environmental science
There is a scientific consensus on the need for spatially detailed information on urban landscapes at a global scale. These data can support a range of environmental services, since cities are places of intense resource consumption and waste generation and of concentrated infrastructure and human settlement exposed to multiple hazards of natural and anthropogenic origin. In the face of climate change, urban data are also required to explore futur…
Keeping global climate change within 1.5 °C through net negative electric cities
The Electric City as a Solution to Sustainable Urban Development
Comprehensive frameworks for sustainable urban development have been advanced by many scholars and global institutions in recent years. These frameworks are broad and overlapping in nature, but each has its own structure and emphasis. We review a cross-section of these frameworks, examining their foundations and general predictions for an urban future. From this review, we cultivate an argument that continued progress toward sustainable urban dev…
Energy and material flows of megacities
Significance Our quantification of energy and material flows for the world’s 27 megacities is a major undertaking, not previously achieved. The sheer magnitude of these flows (e.g., 9% of global electricity, 10% of gasoline; 13% of solid waste) shows the importance of megacities in addressing global environmental challenges. In aggregate the resource flows through megacities are consistent with scaling laws for cities. Statistical relations are e…
Mapping Local Climate Zones for a Worldwide Database of the Form and Function of Cities
Progress in urban climate science is severely restricted by the lack of useful information that describes aspects of the form and function of cities at a detailed spatial resolution. To overcome this shortcoming we are initiating an international effort to develop the World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT) to gather and disseminate this information in a consistent manner for urban areas worldwide. The first step in developing WUDAP…
Evaluation of the ‘local climate zone’ scheme using temperature observations and model simulations
‘Local climate zones’ ( LCZs ) comprise a new and systematic classification of field sites for heat island studies. The classification divides urban and rural landscapes into 17 standard classes, each defined by structural and land cover properties that influence air temperature at screen height. This study is the first to evaluate the conceptual division of LCZs with temperature observations and simulation results from surface–atmosphere models.…
Local Climate Zones for Urban Temperature Studies
The effect of urban development on local thermal climate is widely documented in scientific literature. Observations of urban–rural air temperature differences—or urban heat islands (UHIs)—have been reported for cities and regions worldwide, often with local field sites that are extremely diverse in their physical and climatological characteristics. These sites are usually described only as “urban” or “rural,” leaving much uncertainty about the a…
Influence of meteorological conditions on the intensity and form of the urban heat island effect in Regina
This study investigates the influence of meteorological conditions on the intensity and spatial configuration of the urban heat island effect in Regina, Saskatchewan. A sample of 31 nocturnal heat island intensities measured via automobile surveys averages 3°C, with a maximum intensity reaching 7.5°C. On nights with clear skies and light winds, heat island morphology in Regina is characterized by a clearly defined cliff, plateau, and peak. Regres…
