  • Thirty years of earthquake retrofit in the city of Los Angeles

Open Access•Godfred Ababio, Henry V Burton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

This study examines three decades of seismic retrofit activity in the City of Los Angeles to assess how the implementation has varied across space, time, and socially vulnerable communities. Using more than 29,000 building permits and census-tract sociodemographic data, we analyze temporal and spatial patterns for five vulnerable building types, with detailed focus on cripple-wall and soft-story woodframe structures. Time-series decomposition sho…

  • Smartphone location data show park use patterns in extreme heat (Los Angeles, California, USA)

Open Access•Bethany Woo, Samara Fruman et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2026

  • Unequally prepared

    Hans M Louis‐Charles, Hans Louis-Charles et al.•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2024

Purpose Recent US federal executive orders have prioritized equity within the federal government, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has declared equity as a foundational pillar in their 2022–2026 Strategic Plan. This research study investigates the distributive equity of the most locally disseminated FEMA grant, the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG). Design/methodology/approach The Commonwealth of Virginia was selecte…

  • Smartphone locations reveal patterns of cooling center use as a heat mitigation strategy

    Open Access•Sahar Derakhshan, Trisha N Bautista et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2023

The increasing frequency and duration of extreme heat events prompts questions regarding mitigation proposals and evaluation of current strategies such as cooling centers. Cooling centers may be formally designated or informally used spaces such as indoor shopping centers that the public use as a refuge from heat. Smartphone location data show how a sample of the population moves during the day, what behavioral adjustments they apply in response …

  • Business recovery from disasters

Open Access•Stephanie E Chang, Charlotte Brown et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2022

This paper compares economic recovery in the COVID-19 pandemic with other types of disasters, at the scale of businesses. As countries around the world struggle to emerge from the pandemic, studies of business impact and recovery have proliferated; however, pandemic research is often undertaken without the benefit of insights from long-standing research on past large-scale disruptive events, such as floods, storms, and earthquakes. This paper bui…

  • Spatial Disparities of Covid-19 Cases and Fatalities in United States Counties

Open Access•Sarah Jackson, Sarah L Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This paper examines the spatial and temporal trends in county-level COVID-19 cases and fatalities in the United States during the first year of the pandemic (January 2020-January 2021). Statistical and geospatial analyses highlight greater impacts in the Great Plains, Southwestern and Southern regions based on cases and fatalities per 100,000 population. Significant case and fatality spatial clusters were most prevalent between November 2020 and …

  • Vulnerability of populations exposed to seismic risk in the state of Oklahoma

    Open Access•Sahar Derakhshan, Michael E Hodgson et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2020

  • Temporal and spatial change in disaster resilience in US counties, 2010–2015

    Susan L Cutter, Sahar Derakhshan•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 8

The allure of disaster resilience studies continues to garner interest by policy makers and academics alike. While there are advances in assessing communities’ resilience to natural hazards at different scales, monitoring changes in resilience lags behind. This paper updates the 2010 Baseline Resilience Index for Communities (BRIC) using the six different domains of disaster resilience. The purpose is to test for significant spatial and temporal …
