    From the late-seventeenth to the late-nineteenth century, Yanktonais played a crucial role in sustaining the Sioux confederation. They served within intertribal forces resisting American encroachment, on diplomatic teams that sought peaceful initiatives, and as cultural mediators within the Sioux confederation.
