Autobiography Without an “I”
This paper attempts to bring currere, the autobiographical modality of curriculum theorizing initiated by William Pinar, into conversation with new materialist theories of subjectivity. Specifically, Rosi Braidotti’s posthuman subjectivity, Jane Bennett’s vital materialist self, and Stacey Alaimo’s trans-corporeality are forwarded as markers of “the era of the porous self,” where the material boundaries of the human form are not as static as they…
Mourning The Chrysalids
This paper revisits the well-known and often-taught novel The Chrysalids toward a reconsideration of the novel’s place within curriculum and the pedagogies it may offer. Framed as a mourning ceremony, a way of revisioning what the novel could mean in the present by saying goodbye to what it has meant in the past, the paper progresses in two major moments. The first looks at the novel in the author’s lived experience and discusses personal mournin…

Critical Posthumanism, The Chrysalids , and Educational Change
This paper comprises a re-reading of the 1955 novel by John Wyndham, The Chrysalids, in conversation with philosopher Rosi Braidotti’s formation of critical posthumanism. The author argues that such re-readings of curricular fixtures within secondary English classrooms constitutes a necessary pragmatic intervention in a school system often reluctant to re-examine its canonical texts. The author highlights the way The Chrysalids illustrates the tr…
(Re)Envisioning Childhoods With Mi’kmaw Literatures
A generative reading of four recent children’s books by Mi’kmaw authors through Indigenous and posthumanist lenses, this article suggests that Indigenous children’s literature works at envisioning a “very old” future and highlights the counter-hegemonic potential of that future in the current moment. First, a reading of the Mi’kmaw mythopoetic tradition as speculative fiction is presented. Second, becoming-with Land is discussed as a radical peda…
Pedagogies of Attending and Mourning
In a 1992 chapter, “Cries and Whispers,” William Pinar called for conversations around death to become normative in education, but that call has largely been ignored in curriculum theory. Drawing on Rosi Braidotti’s critical posthumanism, this article engages death as a site of curriculum inquiry. The author begins by discussing the fragility of human life and the necessity of death to the ecological world and highlighting the interconnections be…
