  • Care Experienced Adults in Education: Barriers and Facilitators

Open Access•Victoria Burns, Victoria E Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education•2024

This study explored the life experiences of care experienced adults in higher education to understand the factors that impeded or enhanced their journeys. Care experienced refers to someone who has been in the care of the state at some point in their life. Six students with a history in the care system took part in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis identified global themes of self-reliance, resilience, intrinsic motivation and optimis…

  • Development and validation of the groupwork skills questionnaire (GSQ) for higher education

Jennifer Cummings, Jennifer Cumming et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2015

The aim of the present study was to develop and provide psychometric evidence in support of the groupwork skills questionnaire (GSQ) for measuring task and interpersonal groupwork skills. A 46-item version of the GSQ was initially completed by 672 university students. The number of items was reduced to 15 following exploratory factor analyses, and a two-factor model consisting of task and interpersonal groupwork skills was revealed. Confirmatory …

  • A Life-Style Physical Activity Intervention and the Antibody Response to Pneumococcal Vaccination in Women

Joanna Long, Joanna E Long et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2013

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether a life-style physical activity intervention improved antibody response to a pneumococcal vaccination in sedentary middle-aged women. METHODS: Eighty-nine sedentary women completed a 16-week exercise (physical activity consultation, pedometer, telephone/e-mail prompts; n = 44) or control (advisory leaflet; n = 45) intervention. Pneumococcal vaccination was administered at 12 weeks, and antibody titers (11 of the 23 con…

  • La gentrification de La Petite-Patrie. Quelle place et quel pouvoir pour les aînés

    Jean-Pierre Lavoie, Jean‐pierre Lavoie et al.•ARTICLE•Diversité urbaine•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 6

  • Meningococcal A Vaccination Response is Enhanced by Acute Stress in Men

    Kate M Edwards, Victoria E Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2008

OBJECTIVE: To determine if acute stress experienced at the time of antigenic challenge augments the subsequent immune response. METHODS: Sixty healthy young adults were randomized to exercise (n = 20), mental stress (n = 20) or control (n = 20) before meningococcal A+C vaccination. Antibody concentration was measured by microsphere-based antibody quantification assay at prevaccination, 4 and 20 weeks post vaccination. RESULTS: Meningococcal serog…

  • Complement Cascade Activation After an Acute Psychological Stress Task

    Victoria E Burns, Kate M Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2008

Objective: To examine complement cascade activation after an acute psychological stress task. Psychological stress has been implicated in the exacerbation of inflammatory disorders. Although the complement cascade is a key component of these inflammatory processes, there has been little research regarding its susceptibility to stress. Methods: In experiment 1, 38 healthy participants completed an 8-minute psychological stress task. Complement com…

  • Stress, Coping, and Hepatitis B Antibody Status

Victoria E Burns, Douglas Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2002

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the association between exposure to stressful life events, coping style, and antibody status after hepatitis B vaccination. METHODS: Two hundred sixty medical school undergraduates, who had received the three-dose hepatitis B vaccine before recruitment to this study, completed questionnaires measuring exposure to stressful life events during the past year, customary coping strategies, and health behaviors…

  • Perceived Stress and Psychological Well-Being Are Associated With Antibody Status After Meningitis C Conjugate Vaccination

    Victoria E Burns, Mark T Drayson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2002

Objective Psychological stress has been associated with reduced immune response to a variety of vaccinations. This study is the first to examine antibody status after vaccination with a conjugate vaccine, in which a polysaccharide antigen is conjugated to a protein to elicit a thymus-dependent antibody response. Methods Sixty undergraduate students, who had received the meningitis C conjugate vaccine before recruitment, attended a single testing …
