During the French Intervention in Mexico, 1861–67, the French Ministry of Public Instruction established a scientific commission (Commission scientifique du Mexique, 1864–1867) that would perform functions similar to those of earlier missions to Egypt, Greece, and Algeria. This paper places the work of the Commission in the context of 19th-century French science and complements recent studies on scientific colonialism or imperialism. The role of …

    Gary S Dunbar•ARTICLE•Terrae Incognitae•1974

At the first meeting of the Society for the History of Discoveries, held in Washington, D.C., on 28 December 1961, Professor Thomas Goldstein referred to the Hakluyt Society as our sister society, and this expression stuck in my mind because I regarded it as colossal cheek to make such a comparison with the venerable Hakluyt Society. Over the years I have had my eye out for mentions of similar societies which are dedicated to the history of trave…

African Ranches Ltd., a subsidiary of a Liverpool firm which later became part of the United Africa Company, was the only private cattle ranching enterprise ever established in Northern Nigeria. The company operated a 16,000-acre ranch in western Bornu province from 1914 until 1923, when it was given up to the government. Although ranching was officially discouraged, for a time it looked as though it might succeed. The vicissitudes of this early …

POPULAR conceptions of weather and climate, whether they prove to be accurate or wholly unrealistic, are always interesting. There was a time, not too long ago, when the Weather Bureau took a more than avocational interest in weather folklore and local weather signs.' Today, understandably, it pays less attention to such matters, now that it has good long-term records and an awful array of instruments. There are still things, however, that instru…

    Gary S Dunbar•ARTICLE•Ethnohistory•1960

The Indians, a small group living on the sound side of Island near Hatteras, North Carolina, are mentioned only briefly a few 18th-century accounts, and yet these scraps of information have been variously interpreted with the result of creating some erroneous impressions. Unfortunately, just as some people use the term Cape or Hatteras region to refer to the whole Outer Banks area or to much of northeastern North Carolina, so some writers use the…
