In it for the Long Haul
How do STS scholars and engineering educators work together over an extended period to make change? In 2015, the National Science Foundation created the Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) initiative to address persistent challenges in engineering education. A distinguishing feature of RED was its focus on culture change via interdisciplinary teams that brought social scientists and engineering education researchers into long-term depar…
Teacher Learner, Learner Teacher
Contribution: This paper analyzes reflective thinking within organizational structures in higher education and draws parallels between the challenges faced by educators developing interdisciplinary courses and their students working in ill-structured projects. Background: Interdisciplinarity as a learning goal is prevalent across engineering education literature. However, without organizational support structures to guide faculty members in devel…
Outside the ‘comfort zone’
We present a case study centered on an engineering design initiative in which engineers invite scientists to participate in an interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at designing an unmanned, underwater robot. Our interviews of faculty and student project participants were the central focus of our analysis, while the knowledge products produced by the participants in the form of journal articles played a role in our formulation of an open-ended in…
Analyzing the intersections of institutional and discourse identities in engineering work at the local level
In this study, we examine the ways in which engineering identities are constructed through language by both student and professional engineers and their colleagues in practice. Drawing on the work of James Gee, we explore the ways that discourse both reflects and shapes engineering work, and thus engineering identity, in particular local contexts. In particular, we explore the ways multiple dimensions of identity interact in daily work by examini…
