The Business of Killing Indians
How colonial conquest was driven by state-sponsored, profit-driven campaigns to murder and mutilate Indian peoples in North America From the mid-1600s through the late 1800s, states sponsored scalp bounties and volunteer campaigns to murder and mutilate thousands of Indians throughout North America. Since central governments in Amsterdam, Paris, London, Mexico City, and Washington, DC, failed to provide adequate military support and financial res…

The Persistence of Unfree Labor in the American Southwest
This article explores the continuities of forced labor in the Southwest, where peonage and the partido system lasted for more than a century after the Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery, and places it within the broader context of modern global slavery. Debt peonage and peasant sharecropping-known locally as the partido-are usually classified as two different forms of unfree labor, but in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Southwest they ha…
Matthew Babcock. Apache Adaptation to Hispanic Rule
While the body of literature covering nineteenth-century Apache history is vast, the historiography on Apaches in the Spanish colonial period is comparatively sparse. The documentary sources on that period—housed at archives in Spain, Mexico, and the United States—are notoriously difficult to access, decipher, and translate. In Apache Adaptation to Hispanic Rule, Matthew Babcock helps to fill this void with a comprehensive account of Apache-Hispa…
Comanches and Germans on the Texas Frontier
This book is based on a little-known article—published in German by Heinrich Berghaus in 1851—that offered an early ethnographic and linguistic view of the Comanche nation. The significance of this volume derives from the obscurity of the primary source, its relation to German-Comanche relations in Texas, and its contribution to preserving the native Comanche language. The authors present an English translation of the original article with extens…
Borderlands of Slavery
Borderlands of Slavery explores how the existence of two involuntary labor systems—Mexican peonage and Indian captivity—in the nineteenth-century Southwest impacted the transformation of America's judicial and political institutions during the antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras.
