Work Volition and Work Environments
The present study investigated relationships among work volition, perceived autonomy support from supervisors, cognitive job demands, social support from colleagues, and career adaptability. With a sample of 216 working adults, we used structural equation modeling to test a model predicting career adaptability from work volition through autonomy support, social support, and cognitive demands. Work volition directly predicted autonomy support, and…
Validation of the Chinese Decent Work Scale
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese-language version of the Decent Work Scale (Duffy et al., 2017). An exploratory factor analysis was conducted with a randomly selected proportion of the sample ( n = 291) and resulted in five factors: safe conditions, access to healthcare, adequate compensation, time and rest and values match between organizations and communities. A confirmatory factor anal…
Social justice activism and critical agency among undocumented students
Precarious work in the 21st century
Emerging Perspectives
This chapter summarizes the emerging research, theory, and practice implications stemming from these three variables. Work volition is usually considered a prerequisite to living a calling or experiencing meaningful work; that is, a sense of calling and meaningfulness are more likely when people feel they have the capacity to make choices. The career construction theory and psychology of working theory (PWT) offer helpful strategies for assisting…
Career Development Impacts of Covid-19
The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in drastic changes to employment around the globe. In the present article, we identify four emerging impacts of the pandemic and how career development professionals might respond through policy and practice. Specifically, we focus on four distinct but related domains: unemployment, worker mental health, the work–family interface, and employment disparities. For each domain, we offer recommendation…
The development and initial validation of the Decent Work Scale.
Decent work is positioned as the centerpiece of the recently developed Psychology of Working Theory (PWT; Duffy, Blustein, Diemer, & Autin, 2016). However, to date, no instrument exists which assesses all 5 components of decent work from a psychological perspective. In the current study, we developed the Decent Work Scale (DWS) and demonstrated several aspects of validity with 2 samples of working adults. In Study 1 (N = 275), a large pool of ite…
The Psychology of Working Theory.
In the current article, we build on research from vocational psychology, multicultural psychology, intersectionality, and the sociology of work to construct an empirically testable Psychology of Working Theory (PWT). Our central aim is to explain the work experiences of all individuals, but particularly people near or in poverty, people who face discrimination and marginalization in their lives, and people facing challenging work-based transition…
