Open Access•Erin FitzPatrick, Katie Schrodt et al.•ARTICLE•Reading and Writing•2026

Storytelling is foundational to early language development and linked to later reading and writing achievement. In the pr…

  • The Effects of Invented Spelling Instruction on Literacy Achievement and Writing Motivation

Open Access•Katie Schrodt, Erin FitzPatrick et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

  • The Medium and the Message in Argentina's Presidential Campaigns

    Open Access•Kevin Pallister, Erin FitzPatrick•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2023•References: 16

Do campaigns message to voters consistently across different media? And do competing candidates tend to converge over time on a single national style of campaign messaging? To address these questions, this article employs novel data from a content analysis of campaign spots and candidate tweets from the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections in Argentina. We find that the policy orientation of candidate messaging is similar across different media, …

  • Chapter 9

Open Access•Erin FitzPatrick, Katie Schrodt et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2021

Context Writing is an agentive act. Despite drastic improvements over the past few decades in writing instruction and the push for sharing with authentic audiences, the majority of writing students do is still for the teacher. These practices are at odds with those who advocate for classrooms that are culturally relevant, culturally responsive, and culturally sustaining. When students write for the sole purpose of “doing school,” they are denied …

  • The device in the room

D Bruce Taylor, Laura K Handler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Technology…•2020

This yearlong study explores how digital technologies are used during literacy instruction in the critical year of third grade. We analyzed technology use in 16 classrooms across six geographically and socioeconomically diverse schools. We examined the multiple layers of technology’s influences on teachers’ instructional decision-making and on students’ engagement. Applying Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy alongside the SAMR model, expectations for stude…

Conversational fluency is important to form meaningful connections and relationships with the people around us but is understudied in children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). Communication breakdowns reduce conversational fluency. They occur when a speaker says something that interrupts the flow of conversation requiring a request for clarification or confirmation from their listener to repair the misunderstanding. Young children who are …
