  • The plurality of consciousness

    David A Oakley, Lesley C Eames•CHAPTER•Brain and Mind•2018

This chapter looks at some constraints which seem to operate in determining which events in consciousness either cannot or do not enter self-awareness. Neurological model excludes simple reflex systems, homeostatic systems and association learning systems from consciousness, on the grounds that they do not depend on truly flexible representational processes and are not based on cortical substrates. Animals can be deprived of their neocortex and s…

  • Suggestions to Reduce Clinical Fibromyalgia Pain and Experimentally Induced Pain Produce Parallel Effects on Perceived Pain but Divergent Functional MRI–Based Brain Activity

    Open Access•Stuart W G Derbyshire, Stuart Derbyshire et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2017

OBJECTIVE: Hypnotic suggestion is an empirically validated form of pain control; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. METHODS: Thirteen fibromyalgia patients received suggestions to alter their clinical pain, and 15 healthy controls received suggestions to alter experimental heat pain. Suggestions were delivered before and after hypnotic induction with blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity measured concurrently. RESULTS: Acro…

  • Increased response time of primed associates following an “episodic” hypnotic amnesia suggestion

Open Access•Caleb Henry Smith, David A Oakley et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2013

  • "Ten Years of GWOT, the Failure of Democratization, and the Fallacy of "Ungoverned Spaces

    Open Access•David A Oakley, Pat Proctor•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Security•2012•References: 4

October 7, 2011, marked a decade since the United States invaded Afghanistan and initiated the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). While most ten-year anniversary gifts involve aluminum, tin, or diamonds, the greatest gift U.S. policymakers can present American citizens is a reconsideration of the logic that guides America's counterterrorism strategy. Although the United States has successfully averted large-scale domestic terrorist attacks, its inab…
