    This essay analyzes the henequen hacienda of Yucatán during the years 1870 to 1915, by examining the nature of social relations and the mindset which those relations presupposed. It finds that, in order to adapt to the market and its population of servants, the hacienda functioned as a domestic community whose objective was the reproduction and multiplication of its population rather than the productivity of its labor force.
