  • The use of δ 13 C in CO to determine removal of CH 4 by Cl radicals in the atmosphere

Open Access•Thomas Röckmann, Maarten van Herpen et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

The reaction of CH 4 with chlorine (Cl) radicals in the atmosphere is associated with an extraordinarily strong isotopic fractionation, where 12 CH 4 reacts about 70 ‰ faster with Cl than 13 CH 4 . Therefore, although the Cl-based sink of CH 4 constitutes only a small contribution to its total removal rate, the uncertainty in this small sink has been identified as one of the two largest uncertainties of isotope-based CH 4 source apportionment at …

  • CH4 isotopic signatures of emissions from oil and gas extraction sites in Romania

Open Access•Malika Menoud, Carina van der Veen et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

Methane (CH4) emissions to the atmosphere from the oil and gas sector in Romania remain highly uncertain despite their relevance for the European Union’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Measurements of CH4 isotopic composition can be used for source attribution, which is important in top-down studies of emissions from extended areas. We performed isotope measurements of CH4 in atmospheric air samples collected from an aircraft (24 locat…

  • Quantification of methane emission rate from oil and gas wells in Romania using ground-based measurement techniques

Open Access•Piotr Korbeń, Paweł Jagoda et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

The ROMEO campaign (ROmanian Methane Emissions from Oil and gas) focused on measurements of methane (CH4) emission rates from oil and natural gas (O&G) production in Romania. The campaign took place in October 2019 and covered the southern part of Romania around the cities Bucharest, Ploiesti, Pitesti, and Craiova. This study presents emission rates calculated from mobile in situ measurement of CH4 and wind measurements using the Other Test Metho…

  • Presence of nanoplastics in rural and remote surface waters

Open Access•Dušan Materić, Mike Peacock et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

It is now established that microplastics are a pervasive presence in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The same is assumed to be true for nanoplastics but data are lacking due to technical difficulties associated with sample analysis. Here, we measured nanoplastics in waterbodies at two contrasting sites: remote Siberian Arctic tundra and a forest landscape in southern Sweden. Nanoplastics were detected in all sampled Swedish lakes ( n = 7) and…

  • Sources and sinks of methane in sea ice

Open Access•Caroline Jacques, Célia J Sapart et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2021

We report on methane (CH4) stable isotope (δ13C and δ2H) measurements from landfast sea ice collected near Barrow (Utqiagvik, Alaska) and Cape Evans (Antarctica) over the winter-to-spring transition. These measurements provide novel insights into pathways of CH4 production and consumption in sea ice. We found substantial differences between the two sites. Sea ice overlying the shallow shelf of Barrow was supersaturated in CH4 with a clear microbi…
