  • Negative correlative coordination in Indo-European

    Iker Salaberri•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2025

This paper presents an analysis of the emergence, evolution and variability of negative correlative coordination ( ncc ) constructions in Indo-European, such as Armenian očʻ A ( ew ) očʻ B and Hindi nə A nə B. A new definition of ncc is put forward that takes into account the construction’s semantic and pragmatic properties, and this clause linkage strategy is analyzed in a sample of 240 historical and present-day doculects. It is argued that ncc…

  • A Typological and Diachronic Analysis of Replication

    Open Access•Iker Salaberri, Anne C Wolfsgruber•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Contact•2023•References: 5

The fact that body-part reflexives ( bpr s) are widespread in Romance-lexifier pidgin, creole and mixed ( pcm ) languages of the Atlantic area has usually been accounted for in terms of substratum influence from West African languages, in which such reflexives are common. However, this approach does not explain why bpr s are also frequently found in Romance-lexifier pcm languages like Zamboanga Chavacano and Malacca Creole, which lack a demonstra…

  • A cross-linguistic study of emphatic negative coordination

    Open Access•Iker Salaberri•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2022

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed cross-linguistic analysis of so-called emphatic negative coordination ( enc ). This kind of clause linkage is illustrated by neither and nor in She neither could nor would speak lightly of the accident . On the basis of a 250-language sample, the paper lays out a new typology of enc meant to gain novel insights. It is shown that languages can combine enc types, and that contact and borrowing are …

  • The word order of negation in the history of Basque

    Open Access•Iker Salaberri•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2021

This article investigates word order changes in negated periphrastic constructions in the history of Basque. A number of linguistic variables are argued to correlate with these changes: the negative particle ez is increasingly focalized in main clauses, the innovative pattern negative particle – auxiliary verb – main verb allows for more syntactic flexibility than the conservative one, and the word order changes do not progress at equal rates in …

  • Grammaticalization of reflexivity in Basque

    Open Access•Iker Salaberri•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Linguistics•2020

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed overview of the changes undergone by the reflexive buru -construction in Basque under the light of grammaticalization theory. On the basis of quantitative historical data, the reflexive construction is argued to have undergone changes predicted by the grammaticalization path of reflexive markers: the distinction between regular and reflexive possessive pronouns is lost; anaphoric, non-reflexive u…

  • Variable D-marking on proper naming expressions

    Iker Salaberri•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2020

Recent studies have argued that proper naming expressions cross-linguistically display distinct morphosyntactic behavior, i.e., naming-specific marking for case, definiteness, number and gender, among other categories. This study aims to contribute to the discussion by analyzing the marking of definiteness and specificity (D-marking) on naming expressions and common nouns from a comparative perspective, drawing on a sample of 50 areally, genetica…
