A moral community between Lebanon and Brazil: Entrepreneurship and piety in multilayered encounters
Movement, faith, and home in Muslim communities in the diaspora (Part 2)
This is the introduction to the second part of a special section that spans two issues of Hau (14 [1] and 14 [2]). The articles in the special section focus on home and home-making and all that this entails for Muslims who have left their homes or cannot be fully at home in their home places. Across countries and continents, across sects and in different local contexts, with diverse histories of migration, the articles explore what home is and wh…
Home in exile: Palestinianness as moral subjunctive destination
This article explores the polyvocal and inherently contested arena of Palestinianness as a moral place of belonging, for which I suggest the term “home” as an anthropological category denoting affective places of belonging for a given social group. This minimalistic definition is intended as a heuristic site from which to explore modes of inhabiting a moral destination. The ways in which Palestinianness is conceived and negotiated among refugees …
Living in Refuge: Ritualization and Religiosity in a Christian and a Muslim Palestinian Refugee Camp in Lebanon
In times of increasingly impactful climate crises and ceaseless violent conflicts, new dynamics of forced migrations evolve every day.National policies are not the sole defining drivers of these dynamics, and scholars have to acknowledge international and transnational networks, relationships and sets of obligations that shape the realities independently of nation states' responses. The complexity of the matter has spread academic and public debat…
Refugee studies in Austria today
This article sets out to highlight present-day anthropological contributions to the field of forced migration and to the current debates on this topic in Europe through the experience of developing an international and interdisciplinary network for the study of refugees based in Vienna, Austria. To this end, this article engages with the grounding facts of the present Central European sociohistorical context and global political trends, grapples …
Outcasts among Undesirables: Palestinian Refugees in Brazil between Humanitarianism and Nationalism
The plan for the resettlement of 117 Palestinian refugees from Iraq in Brazil in 2007 involved the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Brazilian government, and so-called civil society, including international nongovernmental organizations. These refugees had already developed a reputation in the Rwayshed refugee camp for being "undesirable" in comparison with other local refugees and unfit for refuge elsewhere. Examination…
Contexto e normatividade: A formação antropológica no Brasil e no exterior
O Secularismo E a Injúria Muçulmana

Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon: Is the Camp a Space of Exception
This article engages the Agamben-Agier perspective on refugee camps, which has become dominant in the last few years but has received little critical analysis. Both Giorgio Agamben and Michel Agier at times define the refugee camp in relation to broader scenarios. While Agamben thinks of the camp as a way to define the modern nation state and law, Agier often digresses from the camp with the city in mind. While the work of both teaches us a great…
Suspicion and the Economy of Trust among Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon
My ethnography of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon (2005–2010) points to a strong disposition towards suspicion associated with refugeeness. This, in turn, highlights politico-moral economies of trust, indexed by honour, that become what I call boundary-maintenance disciplinary practices. The dynamics of suspicion and trust, propelled by social crisis and uprooting, shape all groups, from their social support systems and marriages to collective po…
