  • Flora Annie Steel: A Critical Study of an Unconventional Memsahib

Susmita Roye, Amrita Banerjee et al.•BOOK•Flora Annie Steel•2017

Flora Annie Steel (1847–1929) was a contemporary of Rudyard Kipling and rivaled his popularity as a writer during her lifetime, but her legacy faded due to gender-biased politics. She spent 22 years in India, mainly in the Punjab. This collection is the first to focus entirely on this “unconventional memsahib” and her contribution to turn-of-the-century Anglo-Indian literature. The eight essays draw attention to Steel’s multifaceted work—ranging …

  • Ted Brader. Campaigning for Hearts and Minds: How Emotional Appeals in Political Ads Work

    A Johnston•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 1

If there is one common belief about political ads, it’s that they are filled with emotional appeals designed to make us feel certain ways about candidates, their campaigns, and the election. Ted Brader’s Campaigning for Hearts and Minds explores that belief through a systematic look at how the nonverbal dimensions (music and visual imagery) in political ads affect our reaction to candidates, politics, and ads. The main focus of the book is the ex…

Traditionally depicted as a failure, since it was conquered each time it was attacked (1745, 1758), French Louisbourg is now regarded as an ancien régime success story. Indeed, as A. J. B. (John) Johnston explains, Louisbourg was not a fort, but a full-fledged fortified town, the largest urban center of present-day Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, established to safeguard the French cod fishery.
