African Nationalisms
This essay explores how the African novel has confronted the problem of nation and nationalism. While Europe had centuries to adapt to the centrifugal processes of nation formation, Africa had no such luxury of time. The work of nationhood in Africa was a shock imposition, and this shock was captured by African writers in and as storytelling of fragmentation, disruption, and the eventual dissociation of the protagonists from the project of nation…
North Atlantic Perspectives: A Forum on Stuart Hall’s The Fateful Triangle: Race, Ethnicity, Nation, Part I
Stuart Hall, a founding scholar in the Birmingham School of cultural studies and eminent theorist of ethnicity, identity and difference in the African diaspora, as well as a leading analyst of the cultural politics of the Thatcher and post-Thatcher years, delivered the W. E. B. Du Bois Lectures at Harvard University in 1994. In the lectures, published after a nearly quarter-century delay as The Fateful Triangle: Race, Ethnicity, Nation (2017), Ha…
Inheritance and Finitude: Toward a Literary Phenomenology of Time
Inheritance and Finitude:Toward a Literary Phenomenology of Time Donna V. Jones I shall explore here why lived time, which is a time of a life and thus a time with a foreseeable end that is not (or at the very least is feared will not be) a beginning, is different from the physicist's working conception of time. In particular, I am interested in the experience of time for subaltern and minority groups. I shall begin with a rapid overview of the M…
Mysticism and War: Reflections on Bergson and his Reception During World War I
Once we grasp Bergson’s new conception of an intuitive metaphysics premised on a distance from action, it seems unlikely that a connection could be found between this metaphysics and an activist philosophy of war. In this essay I shall revisit Bergson’s metaphysics to see how they could have been understood to provide support for war. I discuss how Bergson’s metaphysics by way of its number theoretical understanding of oneness was thought to mirr…
Thoughts on Modernism and "Feminist Aesthetics of Potentiality" In Ziarek's Feminist Aesthetics and the Politics of Modernism
This brief review essay focuses on the central question posed in Ewa Plonowska Ziarek's Feminist Aesthetics and the Politics of Modernism: if feminism is considered in social and biographical terms while aesthetics focuses on questions of form and abstraction, does a feminist aesthetics become inconceivable? This question is examined in light of the traditional divide in modernist studies between aesthetics and the political

The League of Nations Experiment in International Protection
Concerns beyond borders was not a new idea in 1919 when the League of Nations became the institutional guardian of such concerns. The freedom of action implied in the concept of sovereignty had always been subject, at least in theory, to the restraint of judgment by some external standard such as divine or natural law. In the system of international protection administered by the League, a number of standards external to the sovereign state were …
Code of Peace: Ethics and Security in the World of Warlord States
Is it possible, in our world of differing beliefs and diverse cultures, to find an ethical framework that can guide actual international relations? In Code of Peace, Dorothy V. Jones sets forth her surprising answer to this perplexing question: Not only is a consensus on ethical principles possible, but it has already been achieved. Jones focuses on the progressive development of international law to disclose an underlying code of ethics that enj…
