  • Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community in Two Amazonian Upland Lakes

Open Access•Jaqueline Silva De Oliveira, Sara Lodi et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Foco•2024•References: 2

Studies of biological communities in Amazonian lakes are limited to floodplains of large rivers. However, the high-altitude lakes of the Serra dos Carajás differ from other lakes in the region due to the high natural concentration of iron and manganese. An important component of this biological community are the macroinvertebrates, some of which are sensitive to environmental and chemical variables. However, little is known about the influence of…

  • Comparative effectiveness of adding delamanid to a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis regimen comprised of three drugs likely to be effective

Open Access•Carly A Rodriguez, Sara Lodi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Clarity about the role of delamanid in longer regimens for multidrug-resistant TB is needed after discordant Phase IIb and Phase III randomized controlled trial results. The Phase IIb trial found that the addition of delamanid to a background regimen hastened culture conversion; the results of the Phase III trial were equivocal. We evaluated the effect of adding delamanid for 24 weeks to three-drug MDR/RR-TB regimens on two- and six-month culture…

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder and risky opioid use among persons living with HIV and chronic pain

Elenore P Bhatraju, Elenore Bhatraju et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

Persons with HIV (PWH) experience chronic pain and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at higher rates than the general population, and more often receive opioid medications to treat chronic pain. A known association exists between PTSD and substance use disorders, but less is known about the relationship between PTSD and risky opioid use among PWH taking prescribed opioid medications. In this observational study of PWH on long-term opioid medi…

  • Effects of a Covid-19 Public Health Lockdown on Drinking and Health Behavior Among Persons with HIV and with Unhealthy Alcohol use in Uganda

Open Access•Brian Beesiga, Kara Marson et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2023

To better understand the impact of Uganda’s initial COVID-19 lockdown on alcohol use, we conducted a cross-sectional survey (August 2020-September 2021) among persons with HIV (PWH) with unhealthy alcohol use (but not receiving an alcohol intervention), enrolled in a trial of incentives to reduce alcohol use and improve isoniazid preventive therapy. We examined associations between bar-based drinking and decreased alcohol use, and decreased alcoh…

  • Unhealthy alcohol use and intimate partner violence among men and women living with HIV in Uganda

Open Access•Amanda P Miller, Robin Fatch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Prevalence of IPV victimization was comparable to estimates from a recent national survey, while perpetration among men was lower than expected. Alcohol use level was not associated with IPV victimization. It is possible that alcohol use in this sample was too high to detect differences in IPV. Our results suggest that women and younger PWH are priority populations for IPV prevention

  • Concordance Between Point-of-Care Urine Ethyl Glucuronide Alcohol Tests and Self-Reported Alcohol Use in Persons with HIV in Uganda

Open Access•Karl C Alcover, Nneka Emenyonu et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

  • HIV, substance use, and intersectional stigma

Open Access•Kimberly Hook, Yuliia Sereda et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

  • Correlates of Intersectional HIV and Substance Use Stigma Affecting People with HIV and Substance Use in St. Petersburg, Russia

Open Access•Sara Lodi, Sarah L Rossi et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

  • Functional Impairment and Cognitive Symptoms Among People with HIV Infection on Chronic Opioid Therapy for Pain

    Open Access•Theresa W Kim, Jeffrey H Samet et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022

  • Stigma and ART initiation among people with HIV and a lifetime history of illicit drug use in Saint-Petersburg, Russia–A prospective cohort analysis

Open Access•Marina V Vetrova, Marina Vetrova et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2022

In this Russian cohort of HIV-positive, ART-naïve PWID, stigma did not change over time and was not associated with ART initiation. Addressing stigma alone is unlikely to increase ART initiation rates in this population. Reducing further existing structural barriers, e.g., by promoting equal access to ART and the value of substance-use treatment for ART treatment success should complement stigma-reduction approaches

  • Predictors of pain-related functional impairment among people living with HIV on long-term opioid therapy

David P Serota, Christine Capozzi et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

People living with HIV (PLWH) have high levels of functional impairment due to pain, also called pain interference. Long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) is commonly prescribed for chronic pain among PLWH. We sought to better understand the predictors of pain interference, measured with the Brief Pain Inventory Interference subscale (BPI-I), among PLWH with chronic pain on LTOT. Using a prospective cohort of PLWH on LTOT we developed a model to identif…
