Kornai, capabilities, and a livable society in Hungary
János Kornai’s critique of overcentralization, shortage, and the soft budget constraint remains indispensable for analyzing socialist and post-socialist institutional failure. Yet Kornai’s framework is not, on its own, a theory of justice or human flourishing. Flowers Growing in the Shadow
Iván Zádori’s book traces the life‐histories and memories of nearly sixty members of Southwest Transdanubia’s Jewish second generation—those born between 1945 and 1965 to Holocaust survivors.
