  • Texas Rangers

    Open Access•Paul H Carlson•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2018

Books on the Texas Rangers have long been popular, and over the last decade and a half such histories have seemingly poured from both university and commercial presses. Led by Bob Alexander, Donaly Brice, and a cadre of friends, including Chuck Parsons, Harold Weiss, Bruce Glasrud, Bill O’Neal, and Mike Cox, Texas historians especially have produced a large number of Ranger titles. As such, the bibliography of this sweeping synthesis is noteworth…

  • Indian Agriculture, Changing Subsistance Patterns, and the Environment on the Southern Great Plains

    Paul H Carlson•CHAPTER•European Intruders and Changes in…•2017

Native Americans on the southern Great Plains were among the first American Indians to encounter Europeans on a sustained basis. The Spanish arrived first in the sixteenth century, and by the early-seventeenth century they had established permanent settlements on the edge of the plains in New Mexico. The emerging culture placed less emphasis on agriculture and more on the hunt. On the southeastern plains the village people moved from being sedent…

  • The Kiowas and the Legend of Kicking Bird

Paul H Carlson, Stan Hoig•ARTICLE•The Journal of Military History•2001

Until now, the mysterious death of Kicking Bird, one of the great leaders of the Kiowas, has overshadowed other significant events of his life. Stan Hoig fills this void in scholarship by providing a more comprehensive account of this important tribal leader and the problems the Kiowas faced during his lifetime. Originally a tribe of the northern mountain regions, the Kiowas migrated to the prairies of Colorado, Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma during…
