  • From allocation to action

Open Access•Rodrigo Costa, Ben Christopher Mann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

The Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program is the primary federal mechanism for financing long-term housing recovery after major U.S. disasters, yet expenditures often lag years behind disaster events. This study examines how administrative processes influence CDBG-DR implementation following the 2017 disasters in Texas, Florida, and California. Using a comparative case study design, the analysis draws on state Acti…

  • Content analysis of conversations on Reddit

Open Access•Jamie Guillory, Sarah Trigger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2024

Introduction: On January 2, 2020, the FDA announced a policy focused in part on prioritizing enforcement of flavored (other than tobacco- or menthol-flavored) cartridge-based electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) without premarket authorization. Methods: We used a query to identify Reddit conversations relevant to the policy from January 2 to May 6, 2020. Our sample included 576 posts (46 posts and 530 accompanying comments). Two analysts c…

  • Changes in industry marketing of electronic nicotine delivery systems on social media following FDA's prioritized enforcement policy

Open Access•Jamie Guillory, Sarah Trigger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2023

Background In February 2020, FDA prioritized enforcement of flavored (other than tobacco- or menthol-flavored) cartridge-based electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) without premarket authorization. To explore potential marketing changes, we conducted a content analysis of brands' social media posts, comparing devices and flavors before/after the policy. Methods We sampled up to three posts before (November 6, 2019–February 5, 2020) and afte…

  • Changes in Retail Tobacco Product Availability Following a Chicago City Ordinance Restricting Sales of Menthol and Other Flavored Tobacco Products Near Schools

    Open Access•Sandy J Slater, Oksana Pugach et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2023

BACKGROUND: In April 2016, the City of Chicago implemented an ordinance restricting the sale of all flavored (including menthol) tobacco products (FTPs), including electronic cigarettes, at retailers located within 500 feet of any public, private, or alternative elementary, middle ("primary"), or high ("secondary") school. We examined changes in retail availability of FTPs from before to after policy implementation among policy-affected retailers…

  • Expanding local sales restrictions on flavoured tobacco products to include menthol

    Lindsay T Olson, Doris G Gammon et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2022

Expanding flavour policies to include menthol/mint/wintergreen was associated with significant decreases in unit sales of most menthol products and in total unit sales by tobacco product category. Increases in menthol and flavoured ENDS sales in these cities may be associated with legal sales by exempted retailers and/or illicit sales by non-compliant retailers, highlighting opportunities for retailer education and enforcement

  • Changes in retail sales of tobacco products in Ontario after a menthol sales restriction

Elizabeth Brown, Elizabeth M Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2021

Ontario's menthol policy was associated with a decrease in retail sales of cigarettes classified as menthol, with little evidence of product substitution. Understanding changes in sales of cigarettes with menthol-suggestive descriptors would be informative

  • Continuous assessment fit for purpose? Analysing the experiences of academics from a South African university of technology

Open Access•Anisa Vahed, Matthys Michielse Walters et al.•ARTICLE•Education Inquiry•2021•References: 3

Despite the expanding literature in the last three decades on modes of implementation and the various forms of formal and informal assessments, there is limited evidence of academics’ knowledge and understanding of continuous assessment practice. Using a mixed methods sequential explanatory research design, this paper aimed to investigate academics’ knowledge and understanding of the structure of continuous assessment and its application in suppo…

  • Changes in cigar sales following implementation of a local policy restricting sales of flavoured non-cigarette tobacco products

Todd Rogers, Ashley L Feld et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2019

The Providence policy had a city-specific impact on retail sales of flavoured cigars, which was attenuated by an increase in sales of concept flavour-named cigars. Products with concept-flavour names may avoid enforcement agency detection, and their continued sale undermines the intent of the policy
