Cities in a Sunburnt Country: Water and the Making of Urban Australia
Water Forever: Warragamba and Wivenhoe Dams
Brisbane and Sydney's prewar dams and reservoirs were not sufficient to provide reticulated water to the hundreds of thousands of new households that settled in rapidly growing suburbs from the early 1950s. The 200 Km City: Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast
Since the 1970s, several Southeast Queensland coastal towns in areas marketed as the ‘Gold Coast’ and the ‘Sunshine Coast’ have merged with each other and joined with Brisbane to become one of the world's longest urban coastal strips. The population of this 200 km long city is fast approaching three million. This urban pattern reflects the preferences of many Australians about where and in what type of housing they would like to live. The unplann…
Holiday Business: Tourism in Australia since 1870
This work provides a breakthrough study of tourism. The authors set out to show how people developed facilities, accommodation and transport, and then how publicity and government support followed. Davidson and Spearritt demonstrate that it provides an important dimension to the social and environmental history of Australia. They are very much concerned with depicting the changing context of tourism: from a pastime of the rich, to the interventio…

from one's particular view of middle class reformers and on the extent to which one subscribes to a physical determinist philosophy. I will admit my basic values in these matters at the outset?a distrust of the moral paternalism and social analysis of middle class reformers however good their aims may have been, and a distrust of that kind of entrenched physical determinism which can produce such unquestioned truths as morality is a question of s…
