Cinema is the Strongest Weapon: Race-Making and Resistance in Fascist Italy
Radioactive Readings: Maria Anna Mariani's Italian Literature in the Nuclear Age: A Poetics of the Bystander
While the association of Italy with nukes in the title of this remarkable book might strike us as far-fetched, Anna Mariani's work makes an urgent and convincing claim for their interdependence. Italy had, and still has, no nuclear arsenal of its own, but it houses hundreds of American bombs and is thereby tethered to global strategies of deterrence based on the threat of mutual mass destruction. What is more, the physicists who pioneered nuclear…
Pina's Pregnancy, Traumatic Realism, and the After-Life of Open City
This study attempts to account for the haunting power and the enduring legacy of the most wrenching shot-sequence in Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City. I am speaking of the scene in which Pina is felled by Nazi gun fire as she chases after the truck carrying Francesco and his comrades seized during the raid on their tenement building in Rome's Prenestino neighborhood. This scene, whose power to shock and disrupt remains unabated over the years…
Italian Film in the Present Tense
For observers of the European film scene, Federico Fellini's death in 1993 came to stand for the demise of Italian cinema as a whole. Exploring an eclectic sampling of works from the new millennium, Italian Film in the Present Tense confronts this narrative of decline with strong evidence to the contrary. Millicent Marcus highlights Italian cinema's new sources of industrial strength, its re-placement of the Rome-centred studio system with region…

Due icone della Shoah”: Primo Levi, Anne Frank, and the “peccato della finzione”
In Primo Levi e Anna Frank: tra testimonianza e letteratura, Maria Anna Mariani undertakes a doubly formidable challenge: to break new ground in the scholarship on these exhaustively studied “icone della Shoah;” and to do so by using a juxtapositional strategy without lapsing into a schematic and reductive drawing of comparisons between the two. Instead, Mariani's book is shaped by the deeper logic announced in its subtitle. What interests this a…

Assessing the contribution of the dental care delivery system to oral health care disparities
Objectives Existing studies of disparities in access to oral health care for underserved populations often focus on supply measures such as number of dentists. This approach overlooks the importance of other aspects of the dental care delivery system, such as personal and practice characteristics of dentists, that determine the capacity to provide care. This study aims to assess the role of such characteristics in access to care of underserved po…

The Seriousness of Play in Boccaccio’s Decameron
The Seriousness of Play in Boccaccio’s Decameron Millicent Marcus (bio) Rereading The World at Play in Boccaccio’s Decameron after twenty-three years was not the journey of nostalgia and regret for lost youth that I feared it would be. Nor was the laudatio temporis acti motif at the top of the list of topoi that assailed me as I pored over the pages of that formative and formidable book. Instead, in reconnecting with Giuseppe Mazzotta’s work, I f…

Return of the referent: Italian cinema for the new millennium
Focusing with special intensity on scenes that feature still photographs in the Italian films Blow-Up, Three Brothers, and The One Hundred Steps, this paper traces a progressive return to the neorealist call for a cinema of truth-telling on the threshold on the new millennium

Italian Film in the Shadow of Auschwitz
The last decade has witnessed an outpouring of Italian films that deal with Fascism, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. This would appear to mark a distinct change from the postwar reluctance to represent such an infamous history. Roberto Benigni’s popular Life is Beautiful (1997) is an obvious example, but there have been a number of other works that have not been exported that also attest to a distinct tendency within Italian domestic production …
Freccero on Blow-Up: Toward a Macro-Vision of Italian Film
Freccero on Blow-Up:Toward a Macro-Vision of Italian Film Millicent Marcus (bio) I can pin-point the exact moment of my conversion to Italian cinema studies. It happened in Spring 1970 when Freccero delivered the lecture that would form the basis of his ground-breaking essay "Blow-Up: From the Word to the Image." Though I could never have begun to fathom the career-defining effects of this lecture at the time, on some level I sensed that radicall…

Characteristics of Dentists Providing Dental Care to Publicly Insured Patients
Dentists who care for publicly insured patients appear to have practices that are different from those who do not, in terms of delivery of patient care and practice structure. Such differences have implications for the access to and quality of dental health care of publicly insured patients. The success of public programs and policies aimed at ensuring access to dental care depends on ability and willingness of dentists to accommodate public pati…
A Longitudinal Analysis of Unmet Need for Oral Treatment in a National Sample of Medical HIV Patients
This longitudinal study examines perceived unmet dental need in a nationally representative probability sample of HIV-infected persons in medical care. A logistic regression analysis modeled the relationship between unmet need and explanatory variables. We estimate that 40% of HIV/AIDS patients report an unmet need associated with being male, being unemployed, injecting drugs, being heterosexual, lacking dental insurance, and having less educatio…

Did: A Direct Measure of Delegation
The DID measures the degree of delegation existing in a dental practice at a given time. Its four elements are: 1) the delegable tasks, 2) the personnel involved, 3) the task frequency, and 4) the task time. The formula yields the ratio of the Maximum State of Delegation to the Actual State of Delegation or, in other words, the theoretical potential for delegation divided by the observed state of actual delegation. Both are expressed in cost-rela…
Differences in Social Perceptions Between Male and Female First‐year Dental Students
Male and female first-year dental students generally possess the same attitudes and the same perceptions about themselves, dentists they observe, and about their ideals for dentists and patients. The null-hypothesis, that is, assuming no difference between the two groups on the basis of these data, is accepted. In general, one must assume that those women who choose dentistry as a career are not significantly different from their men counterparts…
The Accommodating Frate Alberto a Gloss on Decameron IV, 2
Chaucer and the Early Writings of Boccaccio
David Wallace's examination of the aims and literary affiliations of Boccaccio's early writings provides an indispensable preface to and context for an informed appraisal of Chaucer's usage of Boccaccio. Previous studies of the relationship between the work of the two poets have tended to consider Chaucer's borrowings without making a thorough study of the traditions which shaped the Italian writer's work. Wallace argues that Boccaccio was not pr…

A Proposed New System for Valuing Dental Procedures: The Relative Time-Cost Unit
The relative time cost unit (RTCU) is a proposed new system for valuing dental procedures that provides an alternative to traditional relative value units in fee-setting and reimbursement allowances. It incorporates personnel costs, task mixes, and task times into relative weights for dental procedures. The frequently performed procedure, "2-surface amalgam restoration," is used to illustrate how the RTCU values are derived from hospital task ana…
