An Ethnography of Stroke Survivors in Their Church Communities
This research examines the experiences of 12 communication-impaired stroke survivors in their church communities using the ethnographic methods of interviews and participant observation. The interviews reveal that the major concerns of stroke survivors are a desire for community and purpose. Church communities view the problems of a stroke survivor through a medical model of disability rather than a social model, a perspective that results in str…
The development of verbal justifications in the conversations of preschool children and adults

Adults produced more justifications than children during the 2;6 to 2;11 age grouping, but by 3;0 to 3;11, there was no significant differenc…

Three- and four-year-old English monolinguals, Mandarin Chinese monolinguals, and Mandarin-English bilinguals were given appearance-reality, level 2 perspective-taking, and false-belief tasks. All children were tested twice, a week apart; the bilinguals were tested in each of t…

The production of verbal justifications was examined both quantitatively and qualitatively in eight pairs of eight- to eleven-year-old children whose natural discourse was videotaped, transcribed and coded for justifications. Previ…
