Liz Henty, Fábio Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2025

The present issue is the last issue of JSA the current editorial team will have the pleasure of publishing. This was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. Rock art is a global phenomenon that serves as a portal into the ancient past.It comes in many forms, ranging from large and spectacular displays of carved or painted rock to single small cupmarks, and, because of its importance, many of the sites where examples occur have been given UNESCO World Heritage listing (for full list see UNESCO 2022, search term "rock art").Whatever its scale, rock art offers glimpses of its prehistoric artists' percep…

  • Ludovic McLellan Mann's place in the history of prehistoric metrology

    Open Access•Liz Henty•ARTICLE•Scottish Archaeological Journal•2020

Megalithic metrology, the notion that Neolithic monument builders employed a standard unit of measurement when setting out stone circles, has a long history. William Stukeley was the first to suggest that this standard unit was the druid cubit. He may have drawn on Isaac Newton's 1728 description of the temple of Abydos, which noted that the layout utilised cubits in the design, though the druid cubit was Stukeley's invention. This idea of a stan…

General archaeological accounts of Scotland tend to demonstrate broad ideas of the Neolithic transition to farming and the subsequent economic changes in the Bronze Age. Whilst they concentrate on important economic and cultural advancement they tend to lack discussions on cosmological change. This paper looks at one small area in Aberdeenshire to examine four different classes of monument that are found there: long mounds and long cairns; Recumb…
