  • Dating Srivijaya Inscriptions

Peeravit Koad, Orapin Riyaprao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2025

This study presents an approach to date historical inscriptions by integrating modern astronomical computation with the Indian lunisolar calendar system. Focusing on the inscriptions associated with the Srivijaya Kingdom spanning the late seventh to the mid-fourteenth centuries, this study implements a computer program, which utilized differential equation approach to solve Kepler’s Transcendental Equation, to compute planetary positions and visu…

  • Possible Orientation of the Phanom Rung Temple to Spica on Solar Saka New Year’s Day

Orapin Riyaprao, Cherdsak Saelee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2025

In this paper, we explore the off-east orientation of Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, a Khmer-style Hindu temple in northeastern Thailand that may have been aligned to a specific star in accordance with Vedic architectural rules known as Vastu Shastra. Our archaeoastronomical site survey yielded the temple’s axis, which we then compared to the azimuths of various stars during the Khmer Empire. Using Stellarium to calculate precession we found that Spica …

  • The Astronomical Orientation of the Thai Phimai Temple

Cherdsak Saelee, Orapin Riyaprao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2024

In this paper we examine the orientation of Prasat Hin Phimai (an Angkorian-style Buddhist temple in Northeast Thailand) for its astronomical embodiment that could enrich the understanding of ancient culture and potentially date the temple. The obliquely-oriented Phimai Temple may have been aligned with an auspicious star observed relative to the Sun on the horizon, according to the ancient Indian Vastu Shastra principles of architecture. By comp…

  • The Astronomical Orientation of the Thai Phra That Doi Suthep Temple in Relation to the Acronychal Rising of Αlpha Corona Borealis and Visakha Bucha Day

Orapin Riyaprao, Korakamon Sriboonrueang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Astronomical History…•2023

Astronomical orientation of ancient sites can reveal astronomical wisdom utilized to resonate with the context of the maker, thus providing additional insight into that ancient culture. In this study, the orientation of Phra That Doi Suthep Temple, a sacred Buddhist temple that was founded during the prosperous period of the ancient Lanna Kingdom (in Chiang Mai, in present-day Thailand), was investigated, as well as its connection to the traditio…
