  • Weizenbaum's Performance and Theory Modes

Open Access•Misti Yang, Matthew Salzano•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2023

In 1976, Joseph Weizenbaum argued that, because “[t]he achievements of the artificial intelligentsia [were] mainly triumphs of technique,” AI had not “contributed” to theory or “practical problem solving.” Weizenbaum highlighted the celebration of performance without deeper understanding, and in response, he articulated a theory mode for AI that could cultivate human responsibility and judgment. We suggest that, given access to Large Language Mod…

  • Gamestop Investors as an Eng(r)aged Digital Public

Misti Yang, Christopher Lee Adamczyk•ARTICLE•Javnost - The Public•2023

The trading app Robinhood proclaims to be “on a mission to democratise finance for all,” but, during the GameStop Revolution of January 2021, Robinhood prohibited its users from selling GME. For a vocal group of users, this restricted access revealed that Robinhood’s democratising mission was a farce, and they took to Reddit to critique the company’s actions. Subsequent regulatory hearings were held, including a series by the U.S. House Committee…

  • The Promises, Problems, and Possibilities for Alt-Networks

Open Access•Casey Boyle, Robert W Gehl et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2021

The Promises, Problems, and Possibilities for Alt-Networks Introduction Social media has become a central facet of contemporary life and that centralization has narrowed our perspectives and lessened our possibilities (Pariser, 2011; Vaidhyanathan, 2018). This centralizing of social media networks happens for their individual users, but also at the level of how social media informs our discourses through journalistic practice, government institut…

  • Phantastic, Impressive Rhetoric

    Misti Yang•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Rhetoric•2021

This article develops a theory of rhetorical impression through a critical genealogy of the term phantasia. The genealogy demonstrates cause for understanding phantasia as impression, not image. I trace phantasia as impression through the work of Plato and Aristotle but ultimately argue that the stoics offer the most productive leads for thinking through impressions, materiality, and sensations together. Specifically, I demonstrate how the stoics…

  • Painful conversations

    Open Access•Misti Yang•ARTICLE•Communication and the Public•2020•References: 4

Today, conversations automated by algorithms and delivered via screens seek to heal wounds such as substance use disorders, wartime traumas, and a global pandemic. This article explores the relationship between painful conversations, automated discourse, and public action. By articulating what is lost when therapeutic conversations are had with artificial intelligence, I illustrate that painful, human conversations expand capacities—contextualizi…

  • Five theses on technoliberalism and the networked public sphere

    Open Access•Damien Smith Pfister, Misti Yang•ARTICLE•Communication and the Public•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 4

How have digital technologies affected the market logics and economization that constitute the underlying governing rationality of neoliberalism? This essay unfurls five theses that further develop the concept of technoliberalism, the intensification of neoliberalism through computational technology, in the context of the networked public sphere: (1) technoliberalism names the dominant governing rationality in cultures where digital computation t…
