Raising Awareness of Female Genital Mutilation Through Theater
This article considers several plays by European playwrights that focus on cases of female genital mutilation, with the goal of raising awareness among their communities of the practice itself, the reason it exists or persists, and the consequences it has had on the lives of the women who have undergone it. The plays discussed are "Kubra" by Dacia Maraini (2016); Little Stitches by Bahar Brunton, Karis E. Halsall, Isley Lynn and Raúl Quirós Molin…
Sins of the Parents
Drawing on archival material found at the Fondazione Mondadori in Milan, the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome, and the Museo Biblioteca dell’Attore in Genoa, this article recovers and discusses the 1952 play Gli affetti di famiglia, written by Alba de Céspedes and Agostino degli Espinosa. The article focuses on the contribution of degli Espinosa; the several drafts of the play; its themes, characters, and theatrical influences, from Greek tr…
Behind the scenes
Saints on Stage
This article brings to light several examples of the hagiographic plays staged in Italy during the 1950s and early 1960s in parishes, schools, and oratories. The article begins with a brief introduction to the continued tradition of staging the lives of the saints for educational purposes, which focuses on the origins, aims, and main characteristics of theatre for young people of the Salesians, the order founded by Don Bosco in 1859. Next, it off…
After Filumena
The issue of illegitimacy was relevant enough to Italian society to appear in a number of plays staged and/or published even after Eduardo de Filippo’s 1946 landmark work Filumena Marturano. This article addresses plays written by Italian women between 1950 and 1960, and treating conflicts arising from the birth of children out of wedlock or suspected to be the product of an extramarital affair. The discussion of the corpus develops with referenc…
Go and Sin No More
Catholic religious orders that have education as part of their mission have often used visions of the afterlife in theatre productions as vehicles to transmit a message of conversion, especially to those who, because of age or illiteracy, would not benefit as much from Scripture readings or complex sermons. In this article, I look at how such visions of the blessed and the damned, of heaven and hell, of angels and demons, were used in educational…
Educational Theatre for Women in Post-World War II Italy
This book explores an important moment in Italian women's theatre and cultural history: plays written for all-women casts between 1946 and the mid-1960s, authored for the most part by women and perfor
Who Says You Can’t Be a Saint? Female Saints as Heroes on the Italian Catholic Stage
This essay considers how one modern order of Catholic priests and nuns, the Salesians, presented the lives of female saints as heroic role models through theater to young women in Italy in the post-World War II years. My discussion touches on the Salesian use of theater in education; the most important Salesian woman author, Caterina Pesci; the heroic journey of the saints that Pesci chose as role models; the effect that the theatrical representa…
