  • The fragile lives of Sarmatian children

    Open Access•Cristina I Tica, Norbert Kapcsos et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Studying past childhood health and disease remains a vital and highly informative, but still challenging and underrepresented, area of archaeological research. While over the past 20 years there has been a significant increase in the study of children and childhood in archaeology and bioarchaeology, less attention has been paid to children from the Barbaricum. Objective: By integrating palaeoproteomic techniques with bioarchaeological…

  • Szarmata kori temetkezések Jászfényszaru, Hatvani-határ lelőhelyről

Open Access•Attila Marsi, Csilla Líbor et al.•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2025

  • A unique Early Iron Age brooch from Somló Hill

Open Access•Bence Soós, Balázs Lukács et al.•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2024

The aim of this paper is to present an important addition to our knowledge about the Early Iron Age of Somló Hill. In early February 2023, during a metal detector survey of the hill volunteer detectorist Roland Moklovsky found a bronze brooch decorated with a small ornithoid figurine. Although the item is a stray find, its typological relations, and technical characteristics make it one of the most significant archaeological discoveries on the hi…

  • Tiszakürt-Zsilke-tanya

Open Access•Bence Gulyás, Eszter Pásztor et al.•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2024•Cited by: 1

A cemetery section comprising 35 burials was excavated at the site of Tiszakürt-Zsilke-tanya. The burial rites suggest that the community who interred their dead here was of East European steppe origin, settled primarily east of the Tisza River. The graves were poorly furnished; the main chronological indicators are melon seed-shaped beads and two pairs of earrings with big bead pendants. Based on these, the cemetery section can be dated between …

  • A tatai bencés apátság nyomában

    Open Access•Bianka Gina Kovács, Csilla Líbor•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2023

A tatai Nagykert utcában 1979-ben útépítés miatt egy templom körüli temető részlete került elő. A leletanyag alapján feltételezhető, hogy a temetőt a 11. században kezdték használni. A feltárt temetkezések csaknem egyharmada épített sír, melyek nagyobb számban való előfordulása a bencés apátságok temetőiben jellemző.

  • Paleoradiological tests in Hungary and abroad

    Open Access•Krisztián Kiss, Csilla Líbor•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2022

Although anthropology and archaeology have often taken separate paths, publications in recent years have demonstrated the importance of working together in these two areas to draw the right conclusions. At the same time, such projects also involve archaeozoologists, physicists, geneticists, and even radiologists. Imaging methods have been used in the study of the past since the nineteenth century. With them, we can examine not only human or anima…

The Archaeological Heritage Directorate of the Hungarian National Museum conducted excavations in 2018 preceding the construction of motorway M30. The site of Szalaszend–Kis-és Nagyhegy in north-east Hungary is located south of a Bronze Age earth mound. Only a few burials were brought to light from the 10th century, however, this assemblage revealed a fair amount of valuable archaeological and anthropological data. From an anthropological point o…
