This article examines the level and the dynamics of working (economically active) life expectancy in Russia, calculated using the Sullivan method. Our results show that the working life expectancy in Russia is shorter than in European and North American countries. This disadvantage is especially evident for the male population. BACKGROUND: While the health crisis in the former USSR has been well-documented in the case of Russia and other northern former Soviet republics, little is known about countries located in the southern tier of the region, i.e., the Caucasus and Central Asia. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents new mortality information from two Caucasian countries, Georgia and Armenia. Results are compared with information from two relevant countries previously examin…

This article analyzes sociodemographic processes in rural districts of Russia's Near North, primarily Kostroma oblast, which is representative of the region. Attention is focused on analyzing the mechanisms and assessing the scale of depopulation processes, in which high mortality among the working-age population, migration of the young and middle-aged to cities, and an imbalance in the age and sex composition—a predominantly elderly population a…

In this paper, a variety of data sources and methods are used to assess levels of infant mortality and their trend over time in one Central Asian repu…
