Chronic Pain and Opioids in the Elderly
Pain management in older adults may benefit from moving beyond symptom-focused approaches toward a neuropsychiatric model of care aimed at preserving homeostatic balance across sensory, emotional, and motivational domains. Within this framework, opioid therapy can be conceptualised as a potential means of functional and neuroaffective restoration, rather than solely as a strategy for risk reduction
Stimulant Treatment Gap in ADHD Patients with Heroin Use Disorder
Although limited by its cross-sectional nature and setting-related confounders, the study indicates that OAT alone may not be sufficient to manage neurodevelopmental symptoms in ADHD+HUD patients. Further research is necessary to assess the safety and efficacy of integrated stimulant-based treatments, ideally within dual disorder services combining psychiatric and addiction expertise
Discontinuation of Classic Toy Play vs. Digital Play Among 8–10-Year-Old Children
Unstructured free play among children has declined, while digital play via screens has increased, raising developmental concerns. A recent synthesis of this shift is lacking. To review studies (2020–2025) on the decline of unstructured play and rise of digital play in children aged 8–10 and to examine developmental implications, including psychodynamic insights. However, only a minority of included studies reported outcomes specifically for 8–10-…
The Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Early Childhood Education
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into early childhood education presents new opportunities and challenges in fostering cognitive, social, and emotional development. This theoretical discussion synthesizes recent research on AI’s role in personalized learning, educational robotics, gamified learning, and social-emotional development. The study explores theoretical frameworks such as Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, Distributed Cogni…
Characteristics of Stress Sensitivity in Heroin Use Disorder Patients during Their Opioid Agonist Treatment
In the present study, performed on a sample of Heroin Use Disorder (HUD) patients undergoing Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT), we attempted to explore the relationships between stress sensitivity and heroin addiction-related clinical aspects. HUD patients' stress sensitivity was evaluated with the Heroin/PTSD-Spectrum questionnaire (H/PSTD-S). The Drug Addiction History Questionnaire (DAH-Q), the Symptomatological Check List-90 (SCL-90), and The Be…
Substance Use/Dependence in Psychiatric Emergency Setting Leading to Hospitalization
Mental illness diagnosis, the set of substance use positivity at hospitalization, and having received SERD consultation during hospitalization appeared to have a critical role in promoting continuity of care. Moreover, to reduce the gap between the need and the provision of the treatment, a more effective personalized individual program of care should be implemented
Adult-Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Symptoms Seem Not to Influence the Outcome of an Enhanced Agonist Opioid Treatment
The role of opioids and opioid medications in ADHD symptoms is still largely understudied. We tested the hypothesis that, in Heroin Use Disorder (HUD), when patients are treated with Agonist Opioid medications (AOT), treatment outcome is associated with the presence of Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (A-ADHD) symptomatology. A retrospective cohort study of 130 HUD patients in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy, covering 30 years, was divided…
Item Reduction, Psychometric and Biometric Properties of the Italian Version of the Body Perception Questionnaire—Short Form (BPQ-SF)
Body awareness disorders and reactivity are mentioned across a range of clinical problems. Constitutional differences in the control of the bodily state are thought to generate a vulnerability to psychological symptoms. Autonomic nervous system dysfunctions have been associated with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. Though interoception may be a transdiagnostic mechanism promoting the improvement of clinical symptomatology, few psyc…
Substance Use Disorder in Adult-Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Patients
At treatment entry, the presence of different comorbid SUD clusters do not affect ADHD-specific symptomatology or severity
Remarkable Reduction of Cocaine Use in Dual Disorder (Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder/Cocaine Use Disorder) Patients Treated with Medications for ADHD
Background : Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a growing public health concern, but so far no effective pharmacotherapies have been demonstrated. Stimulant medications have proved to be promising in CUD treatment. The self-medication hypothesis (SMH) can help to explain this phenomenon better, especially in cases where CUD co-occurs with adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (A-ADHD). Methods : In the present retrospective study, a sample of…
Non-medical Cannabis Self-Exposure as a Dimensional Predictor of Opioid Dependence Diagnosis
Background: The impact of increasing non-medical cannabis use on vulnerability to develop opioid use disorders has received considerable attention, with contrasting findings. A dimensional analysis of self-exposure to cannabis and other drugs, in individuals with and without opioid dependence (OD) diagnoses, may clarify this issue. Objective: To examine the age of onset of maximal self-exposure to cannabis, alcohol, cocaine, and heroin, in volunt…
Substance Dependence Among Bipolar, Unipolar Depression and Psychotic Homeless
Introduction: Homeless individuals are often mischaracterized as members of a homogeneous population that suffers from a wide mental health and addiction issues, with little consideration of potentially important differences within or between samples. The aim of the present study was to investigate the comorbidy of alcohol and/or substance dependence (ASD) and major psychiatric diagnoses (bipolar disorder, unipolar depression, and psychotic disor…
Six-Month Outcome in Bipolar Spectrum Alcoholics Treated with Acamprosate after Detoxification
Bipolarity seems to be correlated with the efficacy of acamprosate treatment in inducing patients to refrain from alcohol use after detoxification (while avoiding relapses) in depressed alcoholics. Placebo-controlled clinical trials are now warranted to check the validity of this hypothesis
Correlations Between Awareness of Illness (Insight) and History of Addiction in Heroin-Addicted Patients
In a group of 1066 heroin addicts, who were seeking treatment for opioid agonist treatment, we looked for differences in historical, demographic, and clinical characteristics, between patients with different levels of awareness of illness (insight). The results showed that, in the cohort studied, a majority of subjects lacked insight into their heroin-use behavior. Compared with the impaired-insight group, those who possessed insight into their i…
Symptomatological Features of Patients with and without Ecstasy Use during Their First Psychotic Episode
psychosis with a high level of aggressiveness and violence constitutes an important 'side-effect' that surely runs counter to the expected entactogenic action of Ecstasy. At a patient psycho-educational level, this study suggests that the use of Ecstasy may be counterproductive with respect to user expectations
Can Ropinirole Modulate Reinforcing Subjective Effects of Cocaine in Humans
In this study we evaluated, by means of the "cocaine rush visual analog scale," the impact of ropinirole on the expected rush induced by cocaine in a group of heroin addicts abusing cocaine; the self-reported reaction to the rush blockade (if any) on cocaine consumption, and the correlations between this self-reported reaction and individual, clinical, and therapeutic parameters. Nineteen cocaine abuser heroin-dependent patients entered the study…
Long-Term γ-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB) and Disulfiram Combination Therapy in GHB Treatment-Resistant Chronic Alcoholics
Leading Italian studies support the use of γ-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), not only in the treatment of the alcohol withdrawal syndrome, but also in maintaining alcohol abstinence. GHB gives a better result than naltrexone and disulfiram in maintaining abstinence, and it has a better effect on craving than placebo or disulfiram. The problem is that about 30-40% of alcoholics are non-responders to GHB therapy. In our clinical practice, we speculate t…
Differential Substance Abuse Patterns Distribute According To Gender In Heroin Addicts
This study attempts to analyse potential gender differences among a group of heroin addicts seeking treatment at a university-based medical centre. The central modality of treatment at this centre is the use of methadone maintenance. Among those patients entering this program there seems to be an emerging pattern of males who tend to use heroin as their opiate of choice, and are more likely to combine it with cannabis, while females are more like…
