Combined Effects of Arsenic, Cadmium, and Mercury with Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Our study results highlight the influence of environmental metal/metalloid exposures on cardiovascular biomarkers, providing evidence of non-linear and interactive effects that warrant further investigation to understand their role in cardiovascular disease risk better
The Combined Effects of Urine Zinc, Cadmium, Mercury, Lead, and Copper on Endometrial Cancer Staging
Endometrial cancer (EC) is a growing public health concern. This secondary data study of a case series leveraged existing samples and data to explore the potential link between exposure to heavy metals/essential elements and stage of EC. We analyzed urine samples from women with EC, measuring levels of toxic metals (cadmium, mercury, and lead) and essential elements (zinc and copper). Our findings revealed that higher levels of mercury, cadmium, …
Bayesian Network Modeling of Environmental, Social, and Behavioral Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Bayesian network modeling identified interconnected pathways linking obesity, systemic inflammation, chronic stress, and environmental toxicant burden with cardiovascular risk indicators. Findings are consistent with the view that biological dysregulation is linked with CVD and environmental or social stresses
Association of combined lead, cadmium, and mercury with systemic inflammation
Background: Exposure to environmental metals has been increasingly associated with systemic inflammation, which is implicated in the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases, including those with neurodegenerative aspects. However, the complexity of exposure and response relationships, particularly for mixtures of metals, has not been fully elucidated. Objective: This study aims to assess the individual and combined effects of lead, cadmium, and …
Methodologies for the collection of parameters to estimate dust/soil ingestion for young children
Background: Heavy metals, pesticides and a host of contaminants found in dust and soil pose a health risk to young children through ingestion. Dust/soil ingestion rates for young children can be estimated using micro-level activity time series (MLATS) as model inputs. MLATS allow for the generation of frequency and duration of children's contact activities, along with sequential contact patterns. Models using MLATS consider contact types, and tra…
Chronic Stress Indicator
Extensive research has highlighted the strong association between chronic stress and negative health outcomes. This relationship is influenced by various factors, including sociobehavioral, environmental, and genetic and epigenomic forces. To comprehensively assess an individual’s stress levels, we propose the development of the Chronic Stress Indicator (CSI), a novel comprehensive multifaceted tool that incorporates key biological, anthropometri…
Investigating the Interplay of Toxic Metals and Essential Elements in Liver Disease
Liver diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), are a growing global health issue. Environmental exposure to toxic metals can harm the liver, increasing the risk of NAFLD. Essential elements are vital for liver health, but imbalances or deficiencies can contribute to the development of NAFLD. Therefore, understanding the interplay between toxic metals and essential elements in liver disease is important. This study aims to as…
Activities that early care educators are implementing in their childcare environments during the Covid-19 era
Background Teaching children about healthy lifestyles in early care settings can contribute to children’s optimal health during the COVID-19 era; this is because children are vulnerable to communicable diseases in such settings. This study aimed to discover the activities that early care educators are implementing in their childcare settings to assist children become healthy in the COVID- 19 era. Methods An open-ended survey was sent to early car…
Women's perspectives on human milk banking in Ghana
Background Although political and academic interest exists in Ghana to include human milk banks (HMB) into current maternal and child health programs, efforts to establish a HMB have not yet been subjected to any real empirical inspection with the view toward implementation. Furthermore, views toward the establishment of a HMB in Ghana have not been assessed among Ghanaian women. The aims of the current study were to examine Ghanaian women's view…
Preschool Environment
Participants' beliefs about the virus being lethal led to mask wearing and the practice of hygienic behavior. Thus, although the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the emotional and financial status of the studied participants, a positive outcome was the participants' awareness of the need to practice positive health behavior, which will contribute to the overall health and safety of everyone in the preschool environment
The Association of Toxoplasma gondii IgG and Liver Injury in US Adults
T. gondii IgG+ antibody was significantly associated with liver injury biomarkers (ALT, AST, GGT, and ALP) and an increased risk of CLD and NAFLD. Moreover, the association of Toxoplasma with CLD was more evident in specific occupations where the prevalence of Toxoplasma was high. The findings of this study provide insight into utilizing liver biomarkers and US-FLI to assess the health complications of Toxoplasma when imaging tests are not access…
Childcare Issues and the Pandemic
Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically impacted everyday life. Not only has it assailed the world’s populations with millions of deaths and cases, but COVID-19 has also ravaged global economies and affected the lives of women and their children. The purpose of this study was to detail women’s experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and the solutions they came up with to deal with the problems they encountered. Method: Data collection occ…
Combined Effect of Lead Exposure and Allostatic Load on Cardiovascular Disease Mortality—A Preliminary Study
This study explores the combined effect of lead (Pb) exposure and an index of chronic physiological stress on cardiovascular disease mortality using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2008 linked to 1999-2014 National Death Index data. Chronic physiological stress was measured using the allostatic load (AL) index, which was formed by analyzing markers from the cardiovascular, inflammatory, and metabolic s…
The Association of Toxoplasma gondii IgG and Cardiovascular Biomarkers
Background: Toxoplasma gondii ( T. gondii ) is a protozoan parasite with high prevalence worldwide. More than 40 million individuals in the United States carry this parasite. T. gondii infection causes toxoplasmosis, which is the leading cause of death associated with foodborne diseases in the United States. T. gondii infects humans through different routes, and it is capable of invading a wide range of tissues in the human body following the inf…
Quantified Activity Patterns for Young Children in Beach Environments Relevant for Exposure to Contaminants
In a study to evaluate beach play activities, 120 children were videotaped to observe and quantify factors that could influence their exposure to contaminants in the beach environment. Children aged 1 to 6 years were followed by researchers with video cameras at beaches (two in Miami, Florida and two in Galveston, Texas) for approximately one hour each. Factors evaluated included time spent in various beach locations, various activities engaged i…
Food is Environmentally and Culturally Specific!”
Children spend most of their day hours in school, so the dietary choices they make during school days are important for their childhood development and later life. This research examined food choices among immigrant families with school-age children in Indiana, USA. Open-ended questions were answered by 52 immigrant parents in 2017. Parents who answered the questions had children in classes ranging from kindergarten to grade 12. NVivo 11 was used…
