Cuon Versus Canis: A Comparative Guide to the Morphological Distinction of Postcranial Bones and Its Archaeo‐Paleontological Implications
The genera Cuon and Canis are part of the carnivore guild during the late Middle and Late Pleistocene in Europe. However, most identifications in archaeo‐palaeontological contexts are made on cranial and dental elements as these are taxonomically the most diagnostic anatomical regions. In contrast, taxonomical identifications of postcranial remains are scarce and often based on metric criteria because of their morphological similarity between the…
Experimental Protocol for Cooking Rabbits and its Archaeological Implications
Small prey such as rabbits are present in Middle Paleolithic and are abundant in the diet of Upper Paleolithic human groups in southwestern Europe, especially in the Iberian Peninsula. Several archaeological and experimental studies have attempted to relate anthropogenic modifications, in this case cut marks, to different processing and consumption activities. However, the data do not always give similar results, as the presence and quantity of c…
Animal exploitation by the last hunter-gatherers in the Mediterranean Iberia. New data from the Mesolithic groups from Cocina cave (Valencia, Eastern Iberia)
Mesolithic groups in Mediterranean Iberia lived during a period of bioclimatic and cultural changes. Thus, their economic behaviour and the availability of plant and animal resources show some interesting variation compared to previous periods that indicate changes in mobility patterns and social connectivity networks. This paper presents information on patterns of animal exploitation of the last hunter-gatherers in this region through zooarchaeo…
Hunting game: New data on the subsistence strategies during the Uluzzian in Italy
In this study we present the results of the archaeozoological and taphonomic analysis of the macromammal assemblage from the Uluzzian levels of three Italian sites: Uluzzo C Rock Shelter, Roccia San Sebastiano cave, and Riparo del Broion. Our archaeozoological data outlined several common elements and differences between sites sharing this culture. The most abundant taxon registered at Roccia San Sebastiano cave is Cervus elaphus; for Riparo del …
The Early Upper Palaeolithic in Cueva del Arco (Murcia, Spain) and Its Contextualisation in the Iberian Mediterranean
In this article, we present the results of the research carried out at the Gravettian occupation level of Cueva del Arco (Spain). For this purpose, a multidisciplinary investigation has been carried out in which all the elements recovered in the excavations carried out since 2015 at this site have been studied. The results are contextualised alongside all of the existing Gravettian sites in Mediterranean Iberia. The study of the material culture,…
A multi-stage Bayesian modelling for building the chronocultural sequence of the Late Mesolithic at Cueva de la Cocina (Valencia, Eastern Iberia)
Archaeozoological studies: New database and method based on alphanumeric codes
The database is an important tool to collect all the necessary information by any archaeozoologist. However, the specialists do not use a recurring methodology to describe the bone remains, and that complicates the possibility to compare the results from different sites. For these reasons, first, it is necessary to provide a complete and versatile database structure and secondly, employ a fast and objective methodology. In this case, we propose s…
Solutrean macrofauna from Cova de les Cendres (Alicante, Spain): Zooarchaeological and taphonomic analysis
Zooarchaeological and taphonomic analysis were performed on the macrofaunal remains from Solutrean levels XIII and XIV (ca. 17 and 20 ka cal BP) of Cova de les Cendres. The faunal assemblage shows predominance of red deer, followed by Spanish ibex and equids, among which wild ass (Equus hydruntinus) was identified. Carnivores are well represented in level XIII, especially the lynx, whereas they are very rare in level XIV. Different activities of …
Cova de les Malladetes (Valencia, Spain): New Insights About the Early Upper Palaeolithic in the Mediterranean Basin of the Iberian Peninsula
New excavations carried out at Cova de les Malladetes confirm and improve previous information on the archaeological sequence of this site. A total of 29 new dates allow to specify the chronology of the Aurignacian (levels XIVA–XII) and Gravettian (levels XI–VII). Furthermore, concerning the results obtained during the 1970 excavation, three new levels were identified: level XIVB, which represents a short temporal human occupation hiatus, and lev…
Rabbit: More than the Magdalenian main dish in the Iberian Mediterranean region. New data from Cova de les Cendres (Alicante, Spain)
Environment and subsistence strategies at La Viña rock shelter and Llonin cave (Asturias, Spain) during MIS3
Neanderthal subsistence and short-term human occupation patterns during MIS 5. New data from Abrigo de la Quebrada (Valencia, Spain)
