Unsupervised clustering approach to residential typo-morphologies across multiple cities for urban heat vulnerability assessment
GSI, FSI, OSR, H avg , and FVC refine typo-morphologies for LCZ residential types. • Our approach enhances existing and reveals new LCZ subclasses in the Dutch urban context. • Compact typo-morphologies (LCZ 2 and LCZ 42) exhibits highest UHI max intensities. • Most low-rise typo-morphologies have low tree coverage. • Typo-morphologies mapped on a 100 × 100 m grid cells support linking census data. Residential environments are central to addressi…
Transition Processes in Dutch Spatial Planning and Water Management
Climate change is causing more extreme weather conditions in the Netherlands. In response, local governments such as Provinces, Municipalities, and regional Water Boards are encouraged to explore more nature-inclusive ways to keep society safe from flooding and drought. This is considered a transition from the earlier belief that environmental and societal challenges can be solved solely through technical engineering. Instead, landscape-based, cl…
Can Managing Climate Risks Be a Catalyst for Broader Transformative Change
This essay addresses the long-term effectiveness of urban climate change adaptation approaches, based, inter alia, on work in the C40 city network. We argue that in most cities, the dominant framing of climate risk management almost exclusively focuses on short-term incrementalities and preventive solutions directly tackling hazards, vulnerability, and exposure. This approach has serious flaws, leading to missed opportunities for longer-term sust…
From Urban Façade to Green Foundation
Climate risk management evolves rapidly from one additional challenge for urban planning into a radical driver of urban development. In addition to fundamental changes in urban planning to increase long-term resilience, the creation of new opportunities for sustainable transformation is imperative. While urban planners increasingly add climate risks to their menu, implementation of effective action is lagging. To reduce urban infrastructure’s vul…
Designing public spaces through the lively planning integrative perspective
The Importance of Creative Participatory Planning in the Public Place-Making Process
The idea of ‘place’ has long been central to the planning and design practice. Recent trends illustrate increased intervention in the ‘experience’ and ‘feeling’ of places, in order to influence and enhance community dynamics. While place-making is an important tool for experts to utilize in community planning, it should be accompanied by a thorough understanding of the contemporary social dynamics of place and the implications it has for the peop…
