Developing evidence indicators for evaluating K12 EdTech: Towards a consensus on educational impact
Drawing upon a synthesis of literature and cross-sectoral consultations, we present the impact dimensions and three-level tiered indicators for developing a multidimensional approach to evaluating the evidence of impact of educational technology (EdTech). We build on the “5Es” impact framework — efficacy, effectiveness, ethics, equity, and environment — by operationalising it through fifteen impact indicators identified through an extensive liter…
The role of gender in multisensory reading: Children's engagement with olfaction-enhanced digital books
The study explores the effect of olfactory enhancements on children's engagement with digital books and examines potential gender differences in their responses. Grounded in multisensory learning and affordances, the study hypothesised that olfactory cues would enhance children’s engagement during shared reading. The sample consisted of 65 Norwegian-speaking children aged 4–5 from five different early childhood education and care centres (ECEC), …
Inside Out: A Scoping Review on Optimism, Growth Mindsets, and Positive Psychology for Child Well-Being in Ecec
Early social and emotional development is foundational for children’s health, education, well-being, and later adjustment in society. It is also a cornerstone of positive psychology—the exploration of human flourishing at an individual, community, and societal level. Habitual explanatory styles (e.g., mindsets and optimistic thinking) have an impact on human well-being and development and are often acquired during early childhood. These explanato…
Development and psychometric properties of nomination scales for high academic potential in early childhood education and care
This paper describes the development of two nomination scales designed to measure parents’ and teachers’ perceptions of high academic potential among young children, and how the scores correlate with assessed high potential. Parents and teachers of 243 children (49% girls) taking part in the research project ‘Skoleklar’ responded to written surveys, and children were evaluated with specially designed assessments on tablet computers. Principal com…

How do archives start and who are they for? The Caribbean Social Forum, based in Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London, are currently considering these questions as they look to preserve the stories of over 600 Caribbean members who the media have framed as ‘the Windrush Generation’. The paper argues that co-created projects, where the lead is de-centered away from the university institution itself, might begin to decolonise knowledg…
The Moderating Effect of Gender Equality and Other Factors on Pisa and Education Policy
Globalisation and policy transfer in education make it incumbent upon decision makers to prioritise among competing policy options, select policy initiatives that are appropriate for their national contexts, and understand how system-specific factors moderate the relationship between those policies and student outcomes. This study used qualitative comparative analysis and correlational analyses to explore these relationships with publicly availab…
Gender Equality, Human Development, and Pisa Results over Time
Gender equality through the empowerment, representation, and provision of equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, is increasingly recognised as a driver of social outcomes and a fundamental human right. This study explores the longitudinal (2006–2018) relationship between gender equality, human development, and education results as measured by PISA. Gender equality and human development are consistently correlated with PISA scores at e…
Administrative reform as policy change and policy non-change
efforts are quite popular but rarely have much effect. Post-war Japan is no exception. For decades, attention focused on restraining the number of civil servants across all government agencies, a 'balanced' approach that was attractive because it was easy to implement. The administrative reform campaign of the early 1980s had an exceptional impact partly because Rincho was able to play a powerful 'policy sponsorship' role. Despite the ironic tone…
