  • The Social Importance of the Bogomil Movement in the Light of the Sermon by Cosmas the Priest. Source Facts and Historiographical Speculations, an Attempt at Assessment

    Open Access•Jan Mikołaj Wolski, Jan Wolski•ARTICLE•Vox Patrum•2026

The social significance of the Bogomil movement in its earliest phase has been the subject of much analysis in the academic literature. Despite the poor source base, many hypotheses have been formulated in this regard. By reaching out to the primary studies of the topic, I attempt to trace the reasoning presented in them and assess the quality of the arguments used. Most of the claims concerning the social significance of Bogomilism turn out to b…

  • The Non-Orthodox in The Martyrdom of John the New by Gregory Camblak Patterns of Dehumanization

Open Access•Jan Mikołaj Wolski•ARTICLE•Studia Ceranea Journal of the…•2021

The image of the non-Orthodox in Camblak’s work is unequivocally negative. Behind the abusive rhetoric lie patterns well known to social psychology. One can easily recognize the author’s dehumanizing attitude, which reveals the meaning of many elements of Camblak’s narrative in The Martyrdom of John the New. The concept of dehumanization is useful for the study of the attitude of medieval literate elites towards minorities. Although at its core i…

The manuscript, from the author’s family archives, includes the information that this piece was ―written in 1943 for the Inter-union Cooperative Committee (functioning underground i…

  • Autoproscoptae, Bogomils and Messalians in the 14th Century Bulgaria

Open Access•Jan Mikołaj Wolski•ARTICLE•Studia Ceranea Journal of the…•2014

This paper discusses the use of the names of heresies: bogomilism, messalianism and the heresy of autoproscoptae in 14th century Bulgarian sources. The author underlines that the names of bogomilism and messalianism do not always refer to dualism. Two wider unknown examples of such use of the name “messalinism” are recalled. In the Pseudo-Zonaras Nomocanon (CIAI 1160), the name “messalianism” is treated as being equal to the “heresy of autoprosco…
