Sinful wives and queens: The medieval concept of sodomy in Dante’s Comedy
The author of the Divine Comedy , Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), dealt with “sodomites” twice in his masterpiece, once in Inferno and again in Purgatorio . In their examinations of the passage in Inferno , literary critics have typically conflated the modern-day definition of “homosexual” with the medieval “sodomite.” In order to see how Dante viewed non-normative sexuality accurately, however, it is necessary first to uncouple the medieval term “s…
A War of Words Among Women: An Anonymous Bolognese Poem from 1282
Not only do the city registers of medieval Bologna, the Memoriali Bolognesi , contain legal and economic transactions, but they also transmit poetry of the age. Across the decades, the scribes introduced poems between the transactions; over some one hundred such poems have been preserved, many of them unica. Thus, the registers offer a glimpse into the popular entertainments of the times, providing valuable information about the culture of thirte…

Old Lady Avignon: Petrarch’s Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta 136 and the Topos of Vituperium in Vetulam
Scholars have traditionally acknowledged Francis Petrarch’s indebtedness to the amorous poetic schools; however, they have overlooked the influence of comic-realistic verse on him. Yet sonnet 136 of Rerum vulgarium fragmenta demonstrates its impact. Rvf 136 is the first of three sonnets decrying the corruption of Avignon. In it, Petrarch depicts Avignon as if a disgusting woman, illustrating the impact of vituperium in vetulam, a sub-genre of com…

Self-Reflexive Moments in the Poetry of Cecco Angiolieri
It is an unfortunate fact that the preponderance of critical studies on Cecco Angiolieri, and the medieval comic poets in general, took place in the early part of the twentieth century, in the wake of the many important philological discoveries regarding these so-called minor poets. The majority of these studies are now clearly dated, relying as they do on outmoded approaches to literary criticism. Alessandro D'Ancona, who published the first cri…
