  • Homol'ovi III Ground Stone in the Raw: A Study of the Local Sandstone Used to Make Ground Stone Artifacts

    Lee Fratt, Maggie Biancaniello•ARTICLE•KIVA•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Studies of raw material variation and its influence on material selection, manufacture, and use of ground stone tools are often neglected in ground stone analysis. Sandstone, a material that forms a large part of many Anasazi ground stone assemblages, is particularly diverse, and even materials obtained from the same outcrop may vary significantly in physical properties and characteristics. In this preliminary study of a sample of unburned sandst…

  • Pigment Processing at Homol'ovi III: A Preliminary Study

    Erik N Logan, Lee Fratt•ARTICLE•KIVA•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 1

During analysis of the pigment-stained ground stone artifacts from Homol'ovi III, a late thirteenth to fourteenth century Western Anasazi pueblo near Winslow, Arizona, problems were encountered identifying the artifacts with red pigment on their use-surfaces. In order to solve these problems and to learn more about pigment-processing at Homol'ovi III, information from experiments designed to simulate prehistoric pigment processing was combined wi…

  • Continuity and Change in Stone Tools at Mission Tumacacori, Arizona

    John C Whittaker, Lee Fratt•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•1984•References: 8

Flaked stone tools from mission period contexts at Tumacacori are described and compared with related assemblages. Small triangular projectile points are particularly revealing of trends toward the simplification and eventual loss of native technologies in the face of competition with imported tools and materials
