How Effective Are Radio Messages Aimed at Reducing Teen Births Among Latinas? A Randomized Controlled Trial
Standard Operating Procedures
Across the social sciences, growing concerns about research transparency have led to calls for pre-analysis plans (PAPs) that specify in advance how researchers intend to analyze the data they are about to gather. PAPs promote transparency and credibility by helping readers distinguish between exploratory and confirmatory analyses. However, PAPs are time-consuming to write and may fail to anticipate contingencies that arise in the course of data …
A Note on Close Elections and Regression Analysis of the Party Incumbency Advantage
Much research has recently been devoted to understanding the effects of party incumbency following close elections, typically using a regression discontinuity design. Researchers have demonstrated that close elections in the US House of Representatives may systematically favor certain types of candidates, and that a research design that focuses on close elections may therefore be inappropriate for estimation of the incumbency advantage. We demons…
Agnostic notes on regression adjustments to experimental data
Freedman [Adv. in Appl. Math. 40 (2008) 180–193; Ann. Appl. Stat. 2 (2008) 176–196] critiqued ordinary least squares regression adjustment of estimated treatment effects in randomized experiments, using Neyman’s model for randomization inference. Contrary to conventional wisdom, he argued that adjustment can lead to worsened asymptotic precision, invalid measures of precision, and small-sample bias. This paper shows that in sufficiently large sam…
Does Training for the Disadvantaged Work? Evidence from the National JTPA Study
What employment and training strategies work or don't work? For what groups? The authors report and interpret the findings of the largest and most rigorous evaluation ever done of programs designed to increase the employment and earnings, and reduce the dependence, of America's disadvantaged. This study of 16 Job Training Partnership Act programs measures effectiveness separately for adult men, adult women, female youth, and male youth. It finds …
Analysis of Lumber and Pulpwood Production in a Partial Adjustment Model With Dynamic and Variable Speeds of Adjustment
This article proposes a partial adjustment model in which the speed of adjustment is a linear function of policy and economic variables rather than fixed. The model is applied to analyze the behavior of lumber and pulpwood production. Since the model is overparameterized and intrinsically nonlinear, the task of estimation is done by the nonlinear least squares method, using quarterly data covering the period from 1961 through 1983. Both the adjus…
