This article takes as case studies the romantic comedy Bangla (2019), as well as the RaiTV series of the same name (2021), both directed by Phaim Bhuiyan, a young, second-generation Muslim Bangladeshi, living in Rome. Both film and the subsequent series use religion (Islam) to construct narratives about how multiculturalism and religion in Italy coexist and are subject to societal and personal tensions.
