  • Anton Larsson. Landslide Archaeology: Past Hazards and Disasters in the Göta River Valley and Beyond

    Open Access•Carol Rosen•ARTICLE•Current Swedish Archaeology•2025•References: 1

On September 23, 2023, a landslide destroyed part of highway E6 in Stenungsund in western Sweden.Tons and tons of quick clay swept down a slope, damaging nearby buildings and completely covering the road as well as some ancient monuments. This was not the first (nor perhaps the last) time the highway was destroyed in such a way, as the Gta River valley is very prone to landslides. Many such events are known from historical sources, folk memory, and…

  • Beef, butter, and broth: Cooking in 16th-century Sweden

    Open Access•E Maltin, Matti W Leino et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•References: 56

We present the organic residue analysis of sherds of 50 cooking vessels from the 16th-century town of Nya Lödöse, Sweden. We confirm previous analyses showing that lipids are absorbed by glazed ceramic. By analyses of biomarkers and compound-specific stable carbon isotope analyses of fatty acids, we show that pipkins and pans were used for cooking ruminant carcass products, dairy, and plant foods. The dominance of ruminant fat and dairy reflects …

  • A Woman’s Place: Space, Meeting Places and Gender in 16th-Century Nya Lödöse, Sweden

    Open Access•Carol Rosen, Christina Rosén•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2019•References: 9

In this article, archaeological and archival data are used to discuss gender in 16 th -century Nya Lödöse in western Sweeden with a focus on women. Four areas for social space are identified and analysed. The result shows that women seem to have had a somewhat higher degree of agency in Nya Lödöse compared with the surrounding countryside and smaller towns

  • A Scandinavian Town and Its Hinterland: The Case of Nya Lödöse

    Open Access•Per Cornell, Anna Nilsson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Discussing Nordic towns in medieval and Early Modern eras must always start by noting that this is, at least up to the seventeenth century, a kind of periphery. In this article, we summarize aspects of the sixteenth-century town of Nya Lödöse and its hinterland, drawing on both archaeological and historical knowledge. The hinterland experienced an economic development in the sixteenth century, and increased volumes of exports of wood, iron, and a…

  • Rethinking Southern Tiwa: The Geometry of a Triple-Agreement Language

    Carol Rosen•ARTICLE•Language•1990•Cited by: 7

Nouns are predicates. In Southern Tiwa, nouns occur as serial predicates (‘incorporation’ is serialization). Besides their null pronoun argument, they can also license an argument in the role of possessor (‘Possessor Ascension’ is a superfluous notion). These conclusions emerge from a new morphosyntactic analysis, which also entails that the verb agrees with all and only final terms (multistratal reference is unnecessary). The paradigm gaps, cons…

  • Unions as Multi-Predicate Clauses

William D Davies, William Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1988•Cited by: 8

Research on ‘universals of union’, fueled by new data on causatives and by the recognition of non-causative unions, has taken an unexpected turn. For over ten years it presupposed a certain structure and sought LAWS SPECIFIC TO UNION. Remarkably, the empirical findings suggest the opposite: union has a structure never hypothesized for it before (one clause where TWO OR MORE PREDICATES occur successively)—and there is little to stipulate, since ne…

  • The Bird and The Dirt, Inc

    Open Access•Carol Rosen•ARTICLE•The Drama Review TDR•1978

In the tradition of Artaud's commitment to a theatre “whose only value is in its excruciating, magical relation to reality and danger,” and in the tradition, too, of his complaint that “no matter how loudly we clamor for magic in our lives, we are really afraid of pursuing an existence entirely under its influence and sign,” thrives an arts collaborative whose works of “performance art” cross industrial castoffs of urban technology (such as tin c…
