News media coverage of gun violence
This scoping review synthesizes recently published research on news media coverage of gun violence in the United States. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search of Web of Science and Google Scholar databases identified 76 peer-reviewed empirical studies published since 2000. Analysis reveals several recurring themes. First, news media coverage tends to be greater for incidents involving numerous victims, particularly women and/or chi…
Quantifying Fair Chance Policy Implementation and Employer Engagement
Fair-chance hiring policies aim to expand employment opportunities for individuals with criminal records by reducing legal and systemic barriers to work. These policies include Ban-the-Box, occupational licensing reforms, record-sealing, certificates of rehabilitation, and liability protections. Despite growing adoption, their impact remains difficult to quantify due to limited data. To address this, we (1) introduce standardized metrics to asses…
Judicial Professional Background and Pretrial Detention Outcomes
We analyze nearly 70,000 New York City criminal court arraignments to examine how judges’ professional backgrounds influence pretrial detention. We classify judges as having experience in law enforcement, legal services, both, or neither. Judges with law enforcement backgrounds are, on average, 3.9 percentage points more likely than others to order detention and impose cash bail. When bail is imposed, they set amounts about 32% higher. No signifi…
Racial Disparities in Criminal Sentencing Vary Considerably across Federal Judges
Substantial race-based disparities exist in federal criminal sentencing. We analyze 380,000 recent (2006-2019) sentences in the JUSTFAIR database and show that these disparities are large and vary considerably across judges. Judges assign White defendants sentences 13% shorter than Black defendants' and 19% shorter than Hispanic defendants' sentences, on average, conditional on case characteristics and district. Judges one standard deviation abov…
Temporal dynamics of faculty hiring in mathematics
University faculty hiring networks are known to be hierarchical and to exacerbate various types of inequity. Still, a detailed, historical understanding of hiring dynamics lacks in many academic fields. We focus on the field of mathematics, analyzing over 120,000 records from 150 institutions over seven decades to elucidate the temporal dynamics of hiring doctoral-granting (DG) faculty at the individual and departmental levels. We demonstrate tha…
Federal criminal sentencing
Race-based inequity in federal criminal sentencing is widely acknowledged, and yet our understanding of it is far from complete. Inequity may arise from several sources, including direct bias of courtroom actors and structural bias that produces racially disparate impacts. Irrespective of these sources, inequity may also originate from different loci within the federal system. We bring together the questions of the sources and loci of inequity. T…
Diversity of Artists in Major U.S. Museums
The U.S. art museum sector is grappling with diversity. While previous work has investigated the demographic diversity of museum staffs and visitors, the diversity of artists in their collections has remained unreported. We conduct the first large-scale study of artist diversity in museums. By scraping the public online catalogs of 18 major U.S. museums, deploying a sample of 10,000 artist records comprising over 9,000 unique artists to crowdsour…
